His films are like knives that cut through the opaque to reveal the diamond-lik- e truths beneath the surface. Chinatown is the most commercial film that Polanski has ever produced. If all commercial films were as successful as this, there would be little to complain about in the film industry. But the depth of Chinatown sets the film apart from . melodramatic, the Page with a director like Polanski, you can expect to see them at their best. Polanski makes what I considered some minor errors in taste (although he might just be playing around with some film lovers sense of propriety, I wouldnt put it past him), but they dont really detract from the film. Polanski, the man with the knife films, has done it again. Behind the Green Door is one of the three biggie pom films. Although it hasnt received as much as publicity Lovelaces exploits, many people who have seen both movies agree that Behind the Green Door is the better of the two pomos. As in many of the other sexploitation films, Green Door has the thinnest of plots, with the film almost entirely the erotic exploits of Marilyn Chambers, the Ivory Soap girl. Since most of the films of this genre never make it to Utah, you may be curious (yellow). This sounds like a great opportunity to see what the rest of the country is getting aroused (one way or the other) over. P.S. Linda Lovelace is now making a new film tentatively titled Linda Lovelace for President. Her campaign slogan? Shes always on top of the situation. The producers are not going to make the same mistake they made last time; this film is going to have PG and R versions as well as the XXXX version. Linda Lovelace in a PG film! Is nothing sacred? Because the film is so detailed with lifelike situations, you wonder what will occur to' them in the future, and hope the worst wont occur. standard commercial movie one is used to seeing. The setting of the film is Los Angeles in the 1930s. A well-to-d- o woman hires a private detective to spy on her husband. The proof is furnished and the detective paid. The next day, the story is splashed across the front page of the newspaper, and the philanderers real wife shows up. The plot starts taking as many turns as a mountain trail. There is nothing spectacular about the story ( in many cases it parallels the type of detective stories that Hitchcock made famous), but the detail in the film makes the story twice as effective as the typical film of the same genre. Last chance RemfnoeR And because the film is set in the past, and the future is todays present, you hope the film is not true. But the film is done so well that you cant help but believe to Park City that there is some truth to it. Then you begin to wonder how many other similar situations have occurred in real life. It is then that you realize that the film is a typical Polanski creation. The film is in some ways a far more powerful statement on MERCHANTS, LODGES, RENTAL OWNERS & RESTAURATEURS power than any film about Watergate or Vietnam could be, because the mind does not have to dwell on the facts as they are known, but on the fact that almost every city and town could have a situation similar to that in Chinatown. You shiver, but not from the cold. . The characters show the careful construction of Polanskis Knife films. The husband, who is killed early in the film, is slowly revealed to be a man of high integrity. Why was he cheating on his wife? His wife, daughter of her husbands partner, has a secret that she will reveal to no one. What is her secret? Her the acting and are superb.
