The move came almost immediately after Portuguese officials in Lisbon announced that the reins of government in the colony would be turned over to the Black Frelimo guerilla movement. The Dragons of Death, who are white extremists, were trying to capitalize on a growing white antagonism toward the black majority i rule. Portugal, on Sunday, September 8th, ordered its troops to restore peace and tranquillity in the Mozambique capital. The white rebels had gained control of strategic points in Lourenco Marques in their drive to prevent the power transfer to the black regime. Soviet National squad almost ended prematurely when the Russians took offense at signs which were posted in the Expo 74 gymnasium. The Soviets threatened not to play the second half of the game if signs protesting the treatment of Soviet Jews were not removed. The signs were not removed, but the Russians returned anyway and suffered a 75-6-9 defeat.
