Opera House marquee read Tracy Nelson & Mother Earth, but a large portion of the evening (the first half). was Doug Gittings, picker and singer from Dripping Springs, Texas. Knowing next to nothing about the man, I found myself impressed and refreshed. Playing mostly his own compositions, he exposed himself as a thoroughly competent musician, alternating reminding me of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; Townes Van Zandt; and Merle Travis. Which is not to say he didnt sound like Doug Gittings. He was a little bit of all right,' as 'someone said to me after his final song, and I was left wondering why his name wasnt on the poster. s..
