Show Wednesday, April 2d, 1974 THE PARK CITY Page 9 COALITION Good T rout Water Keeps Getting More Scarce by Dave Mueller OK. So youre mad. And each year you find a little more to get mad about. Those favorite beaver ponds of yours that you found dynamited on Willow Creek. The Provo River has been dredged and is nowhere near the fishing that it used to be. Stinking Springs is under water at the Soldier Creek damsite. To say nothing of the mine wastes that leach into Silver Creek what might otherwise be good fishing if it had a chance. But those are the big boys. favorite pool. It could very well be the obstacle that is protecting one of the best trout in the river. Pull it out and the trout moves on...ordies. Second, resist the temptation to cut down those stream-sid- e willows just because they get in the way of your back cast. Overhanging shades the stream (cooling the water) and fishfeeding insects will fall from the branches all season long. Third dont throw your fish offal ( fish guts ) back into the lake or stream from which you caught the fish. When you do this you encourage the survival of bottom-feedesuch as suckers, whitefish and carp. Either pack the offal out with you or throw it on the bank where any number of rs scavenger animals magpies, (skunk, mink, gulls) will dispose of it in a hurry. And lastly, be careful how you wade a stream or lake. The main food source of trout are the insects which live most of their lives attached to rocks and sticks on the bottom of the river or lake. Every time you charge aimlessly into the water thousands of these small creatures are dislodged and perish before they can be of good benefit to the trout. This may not be serious when only a few people are fishing a given area each week, but when the fishing pressure is increased, the effect to the trout food supply can be drastic. Remember, respect your trout habitat. The more fish able to survive in a particular section of trout stream, the better the fishing will be. Stocked fish have a poor survival rate when compared to native fish of the same size. If quality habitat can be preserved then fishing will still be good in years to come. Perhaps there wont be as much fishing, but there will still be some good fishing. Everyone who fishes for trout affects the environment to some extent. Lakes and streams are seldom fished-ou- t. But they are often fishless and get that way through the carelessness of those who don't want to see them as such. What can you do? Good trout water keeps getting more scarce. And with more guys fishing these days, its getting tough to catch a fish on the good water thats left. It seems that everyone the sporknows the good sports ts that a couple of years ago no one knew of. The big squeeze is on. And if you know of any good fishing that's left, you can believe that it is time to consider it precious. So treat those places right. You're not just saving it for someone else, youre trying to save if for yourself, too. Here are a few small things that you can do to protect the good fishing that you may still have. But they are the kind of small things that could determine the quality of fishing you have for years to come. First leave that snag that seems to be in the way in your REAL ESTATE - HAL TAYLOR ASSOC.
