Show Wednesday, April 24, THE 197.4 MRK CITY THE GIVING SOIL by Jennifer Giddings Sharp Did you ever try to grow a tomato in Park City? yell, weve found out that at least they get green before the first frost. Admittedly, this is not the garden bowl of America, but there are many plants that can be grown here and some even prefer the cool summer weather. Ive only experimented a couple of years and am definitely not a gardening expert, but here is a list of pretty sure successes. Try rhubarb, strawberries, raspberries, asparagus, lettuce, peas, beans, carrots, radishes, beets, potatoes, sorrel, chives and mint. Rhubarb is a perennial it grows by itself year after year. I transplanted my first plant from a deserted lot and we love the pies we make from it. This year I got two more starts (crowns and a piece of root) and planted them yesterday as my original plant is already several inches above the ground. The U.S. Dept, of Agriculture bulletin says rhubarb likes cool weather, will thrive in almost any soil, but does best with a fertilizer applied yearly. Just remember that the green leaves are posonous do not they contain oxalic acid eat them use only the stalks. Strawberries should do very well here because they like to cool. They also are a perennial and aren't much bother. They, too, can be planted right now. I have strawberry plants around but have been trying to find a spot free from cats and dogs and havent got many berries yet. Someday, though, were going to have an authentic shortcake. Other perennials Im trying are well-balan- ce asparagus, raspberries and blueberries (which need ammonium sulfate to make the soil acid). Ive heard of a man here who grows beautiful raspberries Ill try to get a word with him. Mint (also a perennial) is growing wild in our garden and' is great for jelly, tea and flavoring.. Chives also are ' perennial are and already up several inches. mm Page 5 V)H(sV little known perennial green that I love is sorrel. It has big leaves like spinach but tastes slightly lemony and gives a delicious tang to salads. And it is coming up by April 15th up here. I got seeds two years ago at Western Garden Center in Salt Lake and planted them in very poor soil. They did fine. Last summer I moved them and they still did fine. I put one plant in a pot to have indoors and it did so well (except for our puppy munching on it) that I plan to have more in this winter. My book says one planting of sorrel is good for three to four years. Try it ! Last year we got 55 pounds of red potatoes from a five pound bag of seed potatoes. Thev can be planted very soon. In fact the USDA bulletin says potatoes, lettuce (leat in this area), peas and spinach can go in 6 weeks before the frost free date, which I think is around June 1. Beets, carrots and radishes go in 4 weeks before the frost-fre- e date, so theyre next. 4-- 2-- Start spading. Find a friend with a horse or cow and offer to clean up the manure, and figure out where to get some plants and seeds. Use you old ski poles for vines to climb on Its Spring! There are seeds in Main Hardware and Days Market and probably some of the other stores here. Linda Byer, a local sixth grader, is selling flower and vegetable seeds at 30c a pack 1 ). Or theres Salt Lake or mail order. I get my seeds from a place called Gurneys in South Dakota, (Gurney Seed and Nursery Co., Yankton, South Dakota 70780) because they send lovely big color catalogs, have a lot of short season hybrids Im trying, have all sorts of exotic things at low prices and send free gifts with your order. A final word corn and tomatoes are another matter. If you think you can grow them in Park City, please let me know your secrets and Ill publish them. Otherwise, Ill let you know what happens to our ex- periments. (649-954- This weeks featured home is a unique blend of old fashioned authenticity and modern spaciousness. Designed by Rain, Wind and Rot, Inc., the building combines yesterdays traditions with todays elements to emanate a feeling of the great outdoors. The structure, which sits on Rossi Hill, is owned by Mr. Milhous Richards, President of Haphazard Homes. The house, named The Abode by its owner, consists of a halfcar garage, a loft, and a void. An- tidpating the energy crisis, Mr. Richards utilized solar power to beat his house. Asked about the hick of indoor plumbing, he ad- mitted it was an inconvenience and that it tended to make the surroundng snow unattractive during winter but he stated that the terrace .was always a lavish green during the summer as a Early Depression with wall-to- wall rubble throughout.
