However my information indicates that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was knighed by Queen Victoria for his work as a field surgeon and historian, was a real person, not a pen name of Dr. Watson. The book stars slowly, depicting Sherlock Holmes overpowered by a cocaine addiction mentioned only nominally in Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, the original version of Sherlock Holmes stories. This addiction has led to a persecution Professor complex in which Holmes accuses the criminal. In an attempt to Mortality of being a master-min- d cure Holmes addiction. Dr. Watson lays a faLse trail to the door of (surprise, anyone) Sigmund Freud. The cure appears worse than the disease when Holmes loses his zest for life. Better than half way through the story finally gets interestwhen a case unfolds within Sigmund Freuds psychiatric ing Sherlock Holmes now liegins to use his uncanny practice. abilities to oliserve and deduce logically. Nicholas Meyer has obviously done his homework (studying the original works of Sherlock Holmes). In classical style, Sherlock Holmes steals a funeral coach, races across the top of a train and engages the enemy in a sword figjit, nearly losing his life. ' I feel that this hook tries to hard to lie modern, with its concentration upon drug addiction and psychological motivation. Personally, I prefer the direct action and deductions of die master detective, as shown in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by A. Conan Doyle, a series of short stories that are tigjitly written and quickly grab your attention. Seven-Per-Ce- mild-manner- snack or An apple, eaten raw, is a good desert. And once in a while it becomes an overworked issue on the television and radio news and in the papers. It all comes back to the same question why doesnt die Army let a soldier grow his hair down to his shoulders if he wants to? What the hell's die difference? To try and answer die question to your satisfaction may not be possible. Whatwell by io do is give you a different perspective as to the why it might tickle your brains. Ready? Lets start off with die why by asking you a question. If' you can answer it, youre more than half way to understanding die whole situation, and why things are the way they are. Here it is: ever wonder why the Army doesnt issue wide ties, long pointed collars on body shirts, low-ris- e flare slacks, wide lapel jackets and platform shoes? Because the Armys old fashioned? No, because the Army is conservative. Match 20 thru 22 Featuring: The Mall Money Dee tFivaueyjEaiRimau TS y BIG ' Conservatism Now conservatism in the Army extends to more than just it extends to bearing and attitude clothing and appearance too. The Army is a reflection of American society. Simply put, that society expects die Army to be conservative. If the Army were very liberal, youd probably see civilians picketing your installation, just the same as if die Army was too rigid and strict. Being conservative is keeping the .balance. But lets get back to die question at hand. The Army has never been (and doesnt want to be) a of fashion and appearance. Imagine what a soldier pace-settwould have locked like over the years if the Army tried to keep pace with fads and fashions. In the fifties, a soldier wouldve worn tight (pegged) slacks, string ties, button down shirt collars, padded shoulders in the jackets and pointed shoes. In the sixties, he wouldve worn bell bottoms, print shirts, no tie, narrow lapel tweed jackets, desert boots or sneakers and colored sun glasses to hold in die flowers in his hair. And think of it another way die cost to keep up with die fads and fashions would be tremendous. . . SALI ro.' Is Still In Progress! The Soldier - An Ideal Civilians have a preconceived idea ofjvhat a soldier looks like. Dont scoff, because its an image to make any soldier proud. Civilians think of a soldier as being lean, resolute and disciplined in his training, yet straight-backecourteous: Sort of die young pi an. This may sound when think not civilians want to create but that you corny, an ideal that transfates SOLDIER" a guy in whom they can feel confident in die worst of situations. And confidence in a soldier (and die military in' general) is very important to the public. So how does you appearance affect die public? Well die way you look is almost the only way a civilian can get an idea of what die military is all about. To them, you are die Army. What you lock like or the way you act in public projects the Army. The public not only has a positive image of what a soldier should look and act like, it also expects you to be that way. it expects that a young man in the Army leads a conservative kind of life in an orderly military society. By conservative, the general public doesnt necessarily mean strict conformity or rigid uniformity it means stability. And remember that middle American, and stability is important to die proverbial . he depends on it. extra KIDS Select Group I Men's Dress Shirts Wo's Nylon Sleepwear I I Reduced Org. 4 to I -- '7 ta! The Army, like any organization, establishes standards for its members to set them apart from others. Not to the point of ridicule, but to die point of pride. With regard to die length of your hair, the Army sets standards. The standards are not extreme; they are conservative. Take a look at people in any store, on any street. Some have diort hair, some have medium length hair, and some have no hair. Many look neatly groomed and many look sloppy. And depending on your own views, an Army haircut can seem short, medium or long. But as a soldier, with pride in'yourself and your profession, you are expected to live by the standards established by the Army riot some of the standards all of the standards.
