Show Ski Suit Faulty workmanship cited for fire sprinkler damage continued from page I City and Alta. According to the complaint, the two lodging associations conspired to exclude Global Sports Tours from booking any tours at the resorts belonging to the associations. Airlines buckled To accomplish this, the suit alleges, required cooper- ation of the airlines. The cooperation came, the suit continues, when the two lodge associations forced the airlines, in particular United, Western, and American, to cease booking reservations through Global. Although the airlines initially refused to go along, the complaint says that when faced with losing their ski package tour business into Salt Lake, the airlines buckled, and agreed to tow the line. Analysts who point to the suit as a possible cause of a relatively slow season single out the airline's animosity as the most important factor. One of them said, Weve heard that a number of booking desks back east are intentionally steering vacationers away from Utah for this very reason. Competing with everyone Phil Kane of the Utah Travel Council doesn't think so. The reason the current ski season seems down, and I emphasize seems, is because virtually no one had snow in 1975 except Utah. This year everybody has snow. not really say because I dont know and because it's cur- rently a matter of litigation, but it doesnt seem likely. Jack Meyer, Salt Lake City manager for United Airlines, put the matter a little stronger. When asked by the Enterprise whether the suit had any bearing on the ski trade this year, he said That is a crock. His opinion is that the share of the market Utah currently has compared to 1975 is the key to the decline. Eldon Pugh Machine 540 W. 400 So., is suing Shop, Delta Fire Sprinkler Co. for $33,639.40 in damages it claims were caused by negligent installation and design of a fire sprinkler system. The complaint in Third District Court claims Delta installed a sprinkler system at Pugh Machine in April, 1975. In August, 1977, it says, the system ruptured, broke, and became dislodged from its anchor position on the ceiling causing damage to the structure and the building contents in the amount of $33,639.41. Pugh Machine is asking for $33,639 plus general damages to be determined by the court. Randy Montgomery, vice of marketing for In 1975, Snowbird, agreed. Utah was the only ball game in town. This year Europe has snow, Colorado has snow, New England has a lot of snow, as do the Sierras. president Were competing with everyone this year, he sur- mised. Neither Kane nor Montgomery think the Global Sports suit is playing a significant role in this years total. Montgomery said, Its hard to believe a suit like that would have any effect. Kane, however, was slightly more cautious. lean Not our business Meyer also adamantly denies the charge airlines are diverting traffice from Utah. Our relationship with associations is as good as ever. What happens between them and one of their wholesalers is their business, not ours. the-lodg- e Regardless of the complaints impact on revenues this year, the fact remains it looms large on the horizon for the ski industry in Utah.
