Show 4monday, 1978 Schism continued front page I his own way precipitated a minor crisis during the session by suggesting some legislators were "provincial, feels the basic issue is politics. Weber County prides itself as one of the strong power bases for the Democratic party, he said. "Yet they feel they havent received the patronage they deserve after keeping Rampton in office and putting Matheson on the Hill." Sowards is a Repuband Speaker of the lican House. Crossed party lines Sow'ards also said the Ogden group seemed "very well knit. So tight were Weber representatives, Sowards suggested, their actions crossed party lines. Ron Halverson took strong exception to that. "Its inter- - NEW OFFICE SPACE AVAILABLE MAJOR GROWTH AREA CENTER OF VALLEY NEW BANK BUILDING 500 TO 600 SQUARE FEET PARKING UTILITIES PAID Construction is starting on the new main office of the HEITAgE esting Glade made that statement. He's been needling Weber County for quite a- while, and I think its unnecessary, he said. Halverson insists he has no quarrel with Salt Lake legislators. "In the Republican party theres no constant conflict. Theres no question Salt Lake gets more of its share, and we're always involved in getting our projects passed, but the Republicans prefer cooperation rather than open conflict. The only other Republican legislator from the Weber area, Dale Stratford, expressed the same opinion. "I have never had any trouble getting along with Salt Lake legislators, and there is no feeling of animosity, he told the Enterprise. Out of this confusion a couple of things became clear. First, all Weber representatives feel Salt Lake gets more than it deserves. Two, the conflict does appear to follow party lines to some extent. And three, Ogden feels excluded from Utah's mainstream development. Pie divided unevenly When asked about patronage, Renstrom and Raw-so- n agreed that it was part of the problem. Renstrom said, We dont feel were getting the positions we deserve just on a population basis, so in a way, Sowards is right. But it's VAKK & TRUST at 4150 South Redwood Road (Carriage Squire). Call John Starley at for information. 966-658- 1 not the real problem. Rawson added, "On a per capita basis we have as many qualified people as Salt Lake, but thats not the way its set up. Rawson was particularly explicit on this point. "In 1976 I was appointed to a blue ribbon committee, appointed by the Governor, to discuss the states building needs. The chairman of the committee was Hughs Brockbank, and he was the kind of legislator who cared nothing about the state, only about Salt Lake, he continued. "Ogden representatives on the committee were so outweighed by Salt Lake interests that virtually nothing for Weber got through, he charged. He said insult was added to injury when Matheson took the committees proposals and asked Salt Lake community leaders to place priority ratings on them. Blame the power structure The two Weber representatives feel most of the blame for the conflict lies with what Renstrom called the "power structure in Salt Lake. The power structure in Salt Lake are the two leading newspapers, KSL and KTVX television stations, the University of Uta.i, and the utilities, although they dont play much of a role in our differences, Renstrom said. Renstrom and Rawson d indict the press for news coverage and blatant editorial favoritism. Renstrom said, "In all the six years Ive been a legislator, Ive never seen a favorable editorial from KSL regarding a Weber project. And although Im not as sure, I dont think the two newspapers have published any editorials favoring one of our projects. lop-side- O our room si I like to come back to those oversize beds. Renstrom had a particular point to make about KSL. "I have called them to complain about their editorial Less than 45 minutes policy, and they say, Come on down to Salt Lake and well take you to lunch and talk about it and I say why dont you come up to Ogden to talk about it and Ill buy you lunch. Needless to say, weve never gotten toRenstrom said the gether. thing got so ridiculous "Wes Bowen and I had harsh words over it. Newspaper guilty Rawsons target is the two newspapers. "Jack Gallivan recommended appropriating $1 million for an elephant cage at Hogle Zoo, but he came out against the St. Benedicts project we wanted. What gets me is Hogle is a private zoo. Somethings wrong when we wont support a state project, a legitimate state project, for a private one funded with tax monies, he fumed. Rawson later pointed out Gallivans influence managed to get $500,000 for the elephant, and "We had to sweat for St. Benedicts. Rawson also pointed to Bill Smart of the Desert News as an example. "This guy went out, got a royal tour, and ended up recommending the state move its fairgrounds to the Salt Palace. The rest of the state, including Weber County, likes the fairgrounds right where it is. We dont want the state fair held in an enclosed convention center, he said. The University of Utah plays a central role in the friction between Salt Lake and Weber. An important project for the Weber representatives was getting funding for a Weber State College graduate program. This year they But, according to got it.
