Was it Song of Songs? One other event that caught my attention the last few weeks is a story that comes from a customer of mine. It seems she and her husband were in Las Vegas a few weeks ago. They aren't big gamblers but her husband a purchased $4 Keno ticket at breakfast. Twenty minutes later they had an extra $1,500 to help pay for the omelets. That's not bad for a day but you have to remember that it was only breakfast. What would you do if you had won $1,500 on Keno that morning? Probably you would buy another $5.00 worth of Keno cards at lunch. And thats what they did. A few minutes later they had $4000 more to cover the cost of their tuna fish sandwich. After lunch they won another $150 with the jackpot on a quarter slot machine. So it does happen ... just not to you or me. Anyway, it's the Christmas season and that means our lives should be full of joy and all that. Dont get me wrong. I'm not being cynical. I throw myself into Christmas as much as anyone. What Im really driving at is how sad people really are during this "happy season. Most of us just sort of muddle through our lives from day to day. We arent forced to take inventory. But during the holiday season its easy to feel left out. Especially when youre young. Do you remember the trauma of dating on Christmas day and New Years evening? If she didnt want to be with you on those days then you weren't Number One. For the rest of the year you could sort of kid yourself but on those two big days you w ere confronted with the hard evidence. God, it could hurt when it didn't work and it sure felt good when it did. As time went on I began to feel left out at Christmas for a second reason. Being a bachelor for the first 32 years of my life, I spent many a Christmas day with other people's children. That can be fun but I was always left with an 5001 incomplete feeling. This year, with my wife and I having a three year old, the season really is fun. But I can't help remembering some of the bad ones. I guess that I'm trying to say that I hope youre not going through one. If you arc, it might give you some comfort to know' that you arc not alone. Other people arc having trouble with their marriages or their love affairs or their children or their parents or their bank accounts or their health. Some arc young and feeling left out. Some are old and being left out. All we know for sure is that it is the season for extremes. If you arc happy, savor it. Part of being human is knowing that it can't last. If things arent going so well, then the good news is that it too might not last. And if you were feeling pretty good but are now feeling miserable, please accept my apology. Merry Christmas and may a pretty girl kidnap you in 1978! ...One more reason, I suppose to carry chains this winter. |
