Show monday, 10 december 26, 1977, A Utah County jobs go begging We have more jobs than said LaRue applicants, Thurston, Provo manager of the Job Service office. As a result, Job Service is running a schedule of advertisements in the Provo Herald, as well as in weekly papers in surrounding communities, encouraging applicants to find out just which jobs are available. Were not encouraging people from outside the area to come to Utah County that can create real problems. But we are asking our local workers to check out the jobs available, he told the Enterprise. Job Service is seeking . tile setters, licensed practical nurses, waiters and waitresses, millwrights, nurses aides, electricians, tapers, carpenters, bricklayers, furnace installers, architectural draftsmen, pressers, clothing products workers and secretaries. Weve got more jobs than we can fill, said Thurston. Up to 80 percent of jobs available are being filled by the office, he said, and comparatively, thats a very high percentage. The Provo office seems to be the only Utah Job Service office with such problems. Statewide, unemployment in November was 5.2 percent. Utah Countys unemployment rate was only 4.4 percent. Nationally the unemployment rate is 6.9 percent. At the end of 1976, Utah County listed 65,000 on its Olympus Hills expanding Bud Bailey Construction Co. has completed a new facade at Olympus Hills Shopping Center, and further remodeling and new construction at the center, 3900 Wasatch Blvd., is expected to begin in February. The $3.5 million expansion and remodeling project will feature a 27,000 square foot addition to the center, providing room for 30 additional shops in a 50,000 square foot mall. Jim Howard of Commercial Consultants told the Enterprise his office has been handling applications for retail space in the new mall. What we want is 30 stores, each exclusive, to give a wide variety of merchandise in the mall, Howard said. We expect to have signed leases with the chosen tenants by mid January. The new portion of the mall should be complete in August. Utah County has exper-ience- d unprecedented growth, with jobs opening faster than people have been coming in, Thurston explained. But it would be a mistake for folks to come barreling into Utah County in the dead of winter and expect to find jobs that easily. We try to discourage that, he said.
