While Utah's economy as a whole seems steady, a glance at demand deposits and turnover ratios in local banks showrs significant gains for both Ogden and Provo during the first quarter this year, while Salt Lake Citys economy remains volatile. 1976-7- 7 According to figures compiled by the Federal Reserve Bank, Ogdens turnover ratio showed significant gains during first quarter this year, rising to 63.7 compared to 57.9 for first quarter last year. (The turnover ratio reflects the value of checks written compared to the amount of money deposited in checking accounts.) SLC In Provo, while the turnover ratio jumped from 36.5 in March 1976 to 38.6 in March this year, the seasonally adjusted demand deposit amount also jumped considerably, from $75 million during first quarter last year to $96 million this year. OGDEN Salt Lake City's demand deposit and turnover ratio figures are probably tied closely to activity in state government accounts, and so do not represent an accurate picture of the state economy as a whole, according to one Federal Reserve economist. Comparing first quarter this year to last, however, shows significant gains in both deposits and ratios. (See chart.)
