The company declared a year-en- d dividend of 10 cents a share and has increased its quarterly dividend to 30 cents per share. The company reported net earnings of approximately $111 million for fiscal 1975. With mining operations in the U.S., Canada and Australia, Utah International realized over half of all profits from coking coal mining in Australia. Most of the Australian coal is shipped to Japan and European countries. Gene Goity, manager of investor relations, described the economic environment in Australia as inflationary but favorable" and said with the election of Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser in December 1975, the Australian economy is better than it has been. in years. The Australian standard of living is comparable to that of the U.S., he said, but the cost of living in Australia is higher than in some parts of the U.S. Labor unions are a dominant force in Australia and the rate of short term work stoppages is high, he said. But in terms of environmental control, the Australian government is less strin gent, Goity added. They (the Australian government) are becoming more strict with environmental controls but their attitude is still less restrictive than that of the federal government in this country. Their laws are less stringent and they have widely accepted our land reclamation program," he said. How could this happen? Unfortunately, most families eligible for this credit were not required to file a tax return because of their low incomes. According to the Internal Revenue Service, if an eligible family filed but was unaware of the credit, the I.R.S. notified the family about the Earned Income Credit. The Earned Income Credit gives those who qualify a 10 refund or credit against taxes owed on the first $4,000 of earned income (wages, tips and net income). When earned income is over 54,000, the credit is reduced by 10 of any excess over $4,000. The largest amount that can be paid is 5400, and there can be no credit when earned income exceeds $8,000. There arc two conditions to quality for the Earned Income Credit: 1. Your adjusted gross income and earned income must be less than $8,000. 2. You must maintain a household in the United States for the entire year for yourself and a dependent child who is under 19 years of age or a full time student or disabled self-employme- nt person.
