The mine was closed in 1970 when tungsten prices were at $35 per unit and operating costs running near $27 per unit. A unit is one pound of ore containing 65 percent tungsten. Since then, per unit prices have increased . to $120 and while he could not state current operating costs, Tenison said he does not believe they have escalated at anywhere near the rate of tungsten prices. The price, while erratic, Tenison said, should be fairly stable since the major known tungsten deposits are in Communist countries and he does not anticipate they will dump large on quantities James K. Devlin, chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Carterfone Communications Corporation (OTC 2.125, 2.50) has been named president and chief operating officer of the company. He succeeds Donald E. McArthur who resigned to pursue interests in the electronics funds transfer communications field. Bill E. Brice will take Mr. Devlins place as chairman of Carterfone. He is a former Carterfone director and once served as legal counsel to the firm. Brice successfully prosecuted the now famous Carterfone case against American Telephone & Telegraph and General Telephone before the Federal Communications Commission. As a consequence, on Jan. 1, 1969, the FCC in effect broke a monopoly on attaching foreign devices to the telephone system unless they were owned and installed by the telephone companies. This, in turn, led to creation of what today is known as the interconnect industry. 60-ye- ar big-telepho- ne David H. The only tungsten mine in Great Britain, the Carrock Fell has no other metals occuring with tungsten, however, Tenison said rock from the mine can be crushed and used in terrazo paving.
