Last year, 12,726 tons were produced in Utah. According to the U.S. Bureau of Mines, mines in Missouri and Utah account for the majority of a 3 percent increase nationwide in mine Survey. According to Stowe, Inc production also has increased in Utah. Monthly production is now running 3,000 tons compared with a 1975 average of 1,550 tons monthly. Nationally mine production increased 7 percent from that of December Fourteen of Utahs 29 counties have exploitable coal reserves, but five have 91.5 percent of the total. In order of importance these include Kane County with 28.9 percent, Carbon County with 20.9 percent, Emery County 18 percent, Garfield County 15.2 percent and Sevier County with 8.5 percent. Twenty coal fields produce in the state but 93 percent of the reserve is contained in six of them, Stowe added. Utahs coal reserve stands at about 24 billion tons. The most significant areas and one where activities are primarily taking place are centered in central Utah (Carbon-Emer- y Counties). Two of the largest mining districts in the state are in these counties. Peabody Coal Companys Deer Creek mine in Emery County as well as Carbon Countys Sunny side mines operated by Kaiser Steel Corporation, are producing in excess of 200,000 tons monthly. Last year, Utah coal mines produced 6.9 million tons of coal. Copper production too, is holding its own Stowe said, especially after the decrease in prices felt last year. According to Charles Kelley, consulting enginner for the Weber Industrial Bureau, several companies have indicated an interest in locating in the Ogden park. Beehive Bottling Company of Brigham City is the first company to sign with the park. Kelley said Beehives Weber Industrial Park, he explained, was funded partly with federal money. Due to a federal restriction, that park cannot accept leases from companies relocating from one city to another. The purpose of the park is to create jobs, not just to move them from one place to another, Kelley explained. Another restriction placed on the park prohibits warehouses from locating there. The Weber park was meant as a jobs park. Warehouses dont produce many jobs, so they can't locate there, said Kelley. The new' West Ogden park is not being built with federal money, and is not meant to be a jobs park, he added, so the city can accept leases from many firms who could not locate in the Weber major reasons for signing with the new park were the firm Production at the Small needed to expand, and its Fry uranium mine near Moab present location was too far is underway.
