Sky View, it appears, has once again fielded a champioteam for the nship-calibre upcoming season. With a victory against American Fork already under their belts, Lindleys team prepares to take on Region 2 hopeful, Ogden, tomorrow at 1 :30 p.m. at Bobcatville. Again this season, the platoon system will play a big part in Bobcat success. While most coaches pray for at least 11 men to fill positions on both offense and defense, Lindley has the good fortune of boasting 22 starting players, 11 different men per platoon. Late in the season this should give the Bobcats an advantage over the two-wa- y systems of the other Region 1 teams. Offensively, Lindley has the same talented group that played together as juniors and second string varsity last year. Filling some big shoes will be senior quarterback Kim Hall. Hall takes the reins from Mark Flammer, named most valuclassificaable player in the tion last year. Though not in the passing mold of Flammer, Hall has proven a capable runner with two rushing games for the varsity last year against Bear River and Granger. Joining Hall in the back field will be lettermen Brian Daines, Jeff Yonk and Bruce Miller. AH three are talented runners, and, save injuries, should have good seasons. Juniors Val Gunnell and Jerry Rasmussen should push for playing time as both could well start for other teams in the region. 4-- A 95-ya- rd Council Notes Members of the Smithfield City Council, Mayor Oral Ballam, a volunteer fireman, the city recreation director and members of the planning and zoning commission responded to a challenge from the Smithfield Third Ward Womens softball team by soundly defeating the ladies in a pre meeting contest last Wednesday. The Smithfield Stake champions were defeated by an unofficial 26 7.An estimated 100 spectators attended the event. In regular session following the game, the council: Heard a building permit report for the 197273 fiscal year which included the construction of 34 homes and fice home additions at a total cost of $465,439; fice commercial buildings totaling $76,000; and 38 garages, carports and accessory buildings totaling $15,768.50. Accepted the resignation of W. Hazen Hillyard from the executive board of the Smithfield Historical Society and approved the four year appointment of Joseph Timmins to the position. Appointed Noble Erickson, Don Hansen and Don Meikle to participate in the study of the proposed underground irrigation system. Approved payment of $4,390.35 with a one year guarantee of installation to Terry Thurston for the completion of a 10 inch water line, a part of a line which will loop the city. The completed portion includes 1,505 feet of trench, two fire hydrants and two intersections. Accepted, subject the city attorneys approval, a time certificate presented by Jerry Cronquist in the amount of needed to proceed with his companys subdivision. Made plans for attendance at the Utah Municipal League Convention to be held Sept. 1315 in Salt Lake City. The council agreed not to meet Aug. 29. d Most of Halls passes should go to Howard Little and Dave Jenkins as split and tight end, respectively. Little will get strong competition from speedster Vic Saunders and Jim Pehrson while Jenkins will continue to battle Nolan Murray. The receiving corps have also proven their ability to score touchdowns as all are pretty fair runners. The men in charge of keeping the enemy off of Halls back will likely be Mark Bailey at center flanked by Ken Tarbet and Bob Low at guards and Mitch James and Ron Gardner at tackles. These five average around 185 so the opposing defense can expect to have their hands full. All-sta- te candidate Ed Hurst heads up a stingy defense of which four members started last year. Hurst leaves the left tackle position to move to linebacker replacing retired Nolan Maughan, who cannot play due to serious injuries. Hurst will team with lettermen Greg Fisher to give the Cats a solid duo at the linebacker spot. Scott Low and Jeff Croft will handle the tackle spots while Steve Thorne, Lynn Siler and Tracy Phillips vye for the starting end jobs. Newcomer to the defense will be Jon Miles at middle guard. Second string and starter last year at the offensive center position. Miles steps to fill the hole vacated by Kandy Hunt. The secondary also starts the season with needed experience. Newcomer Larry Matthews will join Glen Bailey, Kandy Eames and Hal Maughan in the defensive backfield. Eames and Matthews will team to protect the deep pass routes while Bailey and Maughan will handle the corner spots. Lindley begins his fifth year at the Bobcats helm and will be aided by assistants, Villar Ransom, offensive lines; Gordon Churchill, defensive lines, and .Merlin Maughan, defensive backs. Lindley will handle the offensive backs. This, if all turns out for the best, could really be the year of the Cat. Remember that game time tomorrow is 1:30 p.m. 4 |
