Show June THE CITIZEN IB, 1971 TIIE DAIRY FACTORY In a compare 500 small space, nearly tively dairy cows are housed, conveniently located to the milking parlor and to the feed storage. The cows will spend the biggest share of die useful life walking between the manger, the stall and the milking shed. It takes seven hours them at the Sandarose Farm. The Change In Dairying Front the one cow farm, to " the milking stalls in the barn, to the modern milking parlor, to the large dairy factory farms is the history of the dairy industry that can be seen right in the Cache Val- warns ley. Though the traditional dairymen will disagree, the factory dairy farm is here and according to dairy authorities, is the dairy farm of the future. One such farm is the Sand-eroEnterprises in Smith-fielwhich is owned by a former Preston family, the J. Reid Hoggan family. It is operated primarily by the four sons, Pat, Kent, Bradley and Jeff. The dairy operation is probably the largest family owned ooeratkm in the state of sa d, Utah, with almost 500 cows being milked at the present time, and another 100 or so exmected this fall. The farm itself is located on 200 acres between Smith-fiel- d and Amalga, but the dairy operation takes only a portion of the land. The balance is used for growing feed for the dairy herd. The operation is almost totally automated. Feed is brought in by large semis and stored in the large metal silos on the west side of the dairy setup. By button, it is sent through ducts to the manger areas. The manure and waste is scraped daily into pits underneath the manger area and is pumped into large tanks and taken out onto the fields. In spite of the large number of cows, the main odor is from the feed, which smells like molasses. According to Pat, there was a problem with the neighbors when they started building the setup, because of the odor (Continued on page 13) k BUSS from BOSSY! Ask any cow in your herd why she loves Reddy. It's because cows like comfort and Reddy keeps 'em contented by cleaning and ventilating the barn, grooming, curing hay, providing water and oh yes, electric milkers are gentle. Ask yourself why Reddy's your favorite and you'll have to admit it's because he can save labor and save money in so many ways. so-o--o , UTAH POWER & LIGHT COMPANY Enterprises to I milk Dairy The Citizen Photo |
