My wife has ordered me twice to vote against that thing. She refuses to be lowered to the status of equality. QUESTION: What happens to the kind of legislation, originally lobbied for by women, which restricts the amount of weight she can lift on a job, the number of hours she can work, and the number of breaks she must have? SCHMITZ: Thats out. QUESTION: Was the Womens Liberation movement responsible for Congress passing the Equal Rights Amendment? SCHMITZ: I had a feeling in Congress that everyone wanted to of their constitutents so they just wanted to pass the buck. For example, the Senate thought that the House would kill it, the House thought the Senate would kill it. No one wanted to vote against it. However, I had the feeling they wanted it killed, but they wanted someone else to kill it and take the blame in case a lot of women were for it. So, Congress thought, let the state legislatures kill it. But, the state legislatures will reason, Well, if it zipped through Congress without opposition, why should we kill it. But, the buck stops with the State Legislature. The buck stops there and just, because was Congress A lot of irresponsible in passing it does not pass the buck. mean that they should compound congressmen took the attitude that all the women were in favor jof the the crime. QUESTION: Why do you claim that the two party system is dead? schmitz; If it isnt dead, its very sick. The national media complained about the hum-dru- m election last time. It was only a hum-druelection because John Chancellor, Howard K. Smith, and m Walter Cronkite limited the election to two people who didnt differ that much. They differed only in degree. It would have been a very exciting race if they had included me in the sweepstakes. I received a million votes even without them and I thought that was pretty good. QUESTION: You had some criticism about the press, that you werent getting the exposure. What about that? SCHMITZ: Look, we're suing NB-ABC,' and CBS for 25.2 million dollars because they, in effect, gave a campaign contribution to the Republican and Democrat parties by limiting the campaign to them. QUESTION: Recently we heard that Tom Anderson, the newly elected leader of the American Party, criticized George Wallace for not supporting the American Party. Is that true? SCHMITZ: Theres no doubt about it, there is somewhat of a bitter feeling among a lot of the party workers that he did not support the party. Myself, I feel he has made his decision to go with the Democrats. 1 don't feel bitter about it. I've been in politics long enough to understand political people. 1 would just say that I think he is wrong (in staying with the Democrat Party). QUESTION: Do you think would have won the . Wallace nomination if he had not been shot? SCHMITZ: I think that's why he was shot, because he was in danger of doing so. QUESTION: Are you planning to continue to help build the American Party? Speakers Bureau. I have made speeches helping to organize the American Party and, as titular head of the party, I expect to do more of it. I am not the nuts and bolts head of thhe party. Tom Anderson, my running mate, has been elected national chairman of the party. That's his primary responsibility, but, anyplace I can help in speechmaking, 1 will. Im going to start teaching college at Santa Ana College. Im starting there in February. I used to teach there before it. I am not the nuts and bolts head of thhe party. Ill be teaching political science, philosophy, and history. . Have you been QUESTION: invited to President Nixons inauguration? SCHMITZ: 1 have been invited and, in fact. I'll probably go. I'm going to miss part of it because part of it is going on right now during my speaking tour. Even though 1 ran against the President, my plans right now are to go to the Inaugural Ball. 1 think that we critics of the establishment, and of the administration, should carry our criticism to criticising the position. look upon the I as a historic event and honor the position even though it's someone I ran against. I'm doing more than just being a good loser. 1 think there is a great inauguration . ng be, in effect, making ROUSH RARE COINS itself. (Editor's Note) At this point Mr. Schmitz's schedule required that this interview come to an end. He appeared on local radio stations in the afternoon and spoke at the Salt Palace in the evening. The Little Theatre in the Salt Palace was filled to overflowing in the evening meeting. There were an estimated 1,500 people in attendance, many of whom had to sit on folding chairs brought in at the last minute. are There ways to be quite unprejudiced and impartial. One is to be completely ignorant; the other is to be completely indifferent.
