Hook Destroys Rights Free men can vote themselves into slavery, but slaves cannot vote themselves free Mi Dear Editor: Now that the new Legislature session, a very important decision is to be made. The Senate and the House will decide whether y the Equal Rights Amendment will ' be ratified or not. The Amendment which states equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the U nited States or by any state on account of sex will take away far more rights, than it will ever give. I wonder if the women, who are promoting the passage of this Amendment, realize what it will do to the rights they already have, which have been protected by legislation. Do they know that; (a) the E.R.A. will wipe out the financial obligation of a husband and father to support his wife and children, (b) it will wipe out laws which protect women against sex crimes, such as rape, etc. (c) it will make women subject to the draft and to Amendment in our platform. Reese Hunter n V IQ1- UN Fails Again The increasingly disunited United Nations dealt still another staggering blow to its own moral authority this week, when, in effect, it voted to duck the pressing issue of international terrorism. Resolutions calling for effective and concerted action against such terrorism were bypassed in favor of an all but meaningless proposal to study its causes. Kicked in the pants, as usual, were the United States and its friends. They had hoped that the UN, confronted with a clear-cuniversal menace to world security, might for a refreshing change unite in assuming its intended function of peace-keepin- g action. A vote of 76-3- 4 in the General Assemblys legal committee favored a cover-u-p instead of ut the John Schmitz hoped-for-face-u- p. The winning vote, sure to be affirmed by the General Assembly itself, was accomplished by a coalition of Arab, African and Asian countries with the backing, naturally, of all the Communist forces. None of them would go on record as favoring terrorism. But all want no UN interference with the various liberation movements they support either actively or as a matter of principle. So, once again, the UN has defaulted on its primary purpose. Henceforth any effective coordinated action against such terrorism as international air piracy or the mailing of letter bombs will have to be taken by concerned countries acting outside of the world organization an alternative the United States spokesmen said will be taken. We are not quite ready to declare the UN hasoutlived all really constructive use as an instrument for aiding the cause of world peace and cooperation a usefulness the old League of Nations lost when it became similarly unable or unwilling to tackle the realities of its era. The UN, just possibly, may redeem itself one of these days. Meanwhile the possibility grows dimmer and dimmer. so-call- ed THE NEW WAR OVER CONSTITUTIONAL POWER The mood in Congress these days is one of war Some members demand that the war in Vietnam be stopped while, at the same time, declaring war on the President. The attitude seems to be, who does the President think he is trying to stop the country from going bankrupt and avoiding tax increases? Congress represents the people, the argument goes, and if Congress passes laws to bankrupt the them, then the people government and the people must want continued deficit spending and higher taxes. This is the power and right of Congress. Congressional leaders, many who favored giving the Chief Executive excessive powers, now call for a mobilization to restore power to the Congress as a branch of government as intended by the Constitution. Certainly this is good government and preservation of the but separation of powers is desired by all Americans while we are restoring the proper balance of the powers of government, why stop with Congress? Schmitz, former John Congressman from California and recent candidate for president on the American Party, was in Satlt Lake City Wednesday as part of a speakingtour. He was sponsored in Salt Lake City by the American Opinion Speakers Bureau, a national speakers bureau organized by the John Birch Society. Mr. Schmitz is a recently appointed member of the national Council of the John Birch Societ and, as such, helps to formulate policies and programs of that organization. Mr. Schmitz held a press conference Opinion at the American Library-Booksto- re located at 2307 Highland Drive in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake County. He answered questions on a variety of subjects relating to his recent candidacy, the American Party, and especially emphasized the Equal Rights Amendment. Concerning the latter, Mr. Schmitz answered the following questions: QUESTION: The other day someone at the University of Utah took a poll on the Equal Rights Amendment. Their poll indicated that the American Independent Party in Utah was 70 in favor or the Amendment. Does that sould like an accurate poll to you? ANSWER: I find that poll almost impossible to believe. We haven't changed our view since we took our stand on the Equal Rights al spend? Why should Congress only concern itself with powers they feel have been usurped by the President? ? The The Utah mm Independent U.N.
