HART, new secretary of the J. industrial department of the Salt Lake chamber of commerce, recent- -' ly outlined the program of .that department and in a bulletin to members of the chamber stated the policy of that department during the present year. In part, Mr. Hart says: Utah is regarded generally as an agricultural state, yet upon investigation we find that the production of our mines, including coal, is nearly as great as that of agriculture, stock raising, wool, dairying and poultry combined, while tfie gross of manufactured products is about double that of either, which indiciates that and industrial development lias been under way almost vogue, but chiefly in evening dresses. The slim silhouette refuses to but give way to the still unpopularized, plump figure. The cape and scarf are still run-uni- ONE of the industries and should be correlated with other industries for the best development of the ' state. The desired end to be attained v through the activity of ,the Chamber of Commerce is ' not necessarily the bringing in of new industries by outside interests but is the sistent development of our natural resources and the building up of payrolls in this state. The Industrial Department may serve several important functions and these must be correlated properly for best results. In the first place and as a basis of all other functions, the Industrial' Depart ment should be the clearing house for data relating to the industrial status, needs, possibilities, and development of the state as a whole and of Salt Lake City particularly. The general impression seems to prevail that the sole function of the Industrial Department of the Chamber of Commerce is to secure new industries for Salt Lake City and Utah. It is urged that the department hasw a much broader function that of SERVICE to the community as a whole and to industry -- . particularly. The Industrial Department would be amiss did it not contemplate service to local industries already es- tablished aid and encouragement to those in distress-constru- ctive guidance to those which advantageously may expand their activities. t much-heralde- d, By the Stroller ng strong, but the hipline jacket is the newest dress feature. It is of the same material as the garment. Worn over a sleeveless dress, it converts it into, a street frock, serving an economy purpose. Our boyish fad has passed and femininity is the note of the hour. Even sport clothes have less of and more of softness. We deck ourselves with bizarre costume jewelry, particularly the monstrous dinner ring; but there is no more popular ornament for dress than the se-veri- tv m string of pearls. in skirts is coming back, or should we say returning? Soft, fl uttery chiffons and georgettes usher in the new season. They are a riot of color in gay flowered or Back-fullne- ss . futuristic designs. Funny thing how rambling, impressions can become in these Sat looking April days. through a' window the other day that had a view of the Temple. Saw two women on the top sweeping one of the rugs,, and wondering how wide the roof was and where they'd light if they tumbled off. Neither of them, rain-wash- ed did. And another of my April hobbies is standing in the lee side of a doorway across from the Temple spires the hundreds to watch the pigeons of them whirl and dive, bank and spin through the towers in endless procession against the gray which melts into the stone of the building itself. Chain grocery stores and real estate offices have monopolized .the West side of Main above First South. There are three of each, and where there isn't a grocery store or real estate office, theres 'a jewelry shop! New Yorks dapper mayor must not have had anything on W. Mont Ferry when he was mayor of Salt Lake. I wasnt in these parts at that time, but I saw the former city chief the other day and lie certainly was a walking specimen of what the well dressed business man shoiild wear. I envy him. About all that can be said for my clothes is that -they fit. |
