" ' blindfolded. Louisville Times. Star. dianapolis are In- Traffic Troubles. (ThPENING of increased automotive traffic with the advent of spring weather has created a multitude of traffic problems that previously have been only mildly apparent, but .which now need immediate adjustment. Some of the ills have been provided against by traffic rules while others are not cared for, or are left unguarded for various reasons. To Salt Lakers Jthe most serious problem is the congested district driving. The city has adequate provision for moving traffic, and stops by street cars toabolishing of half-wa-y gether with parallel parking near intersections have aided drivers. But the cars continue to pile up at intersections under inefficient handling. Traffic officers apparently take no steps to curb the growing practice of 'cutting across traffic lanes and. sluggish moving of cars at comers. Cutting of cars into another lane in order to negotiate a turn not only is dangerous but involves loss of time, is awkward, and is easily avoidable, if the driver gets into the proper lane when he approaches a traffic light. Six weeks of intensive educational work on that problem would eliminate considerable congestion at comers. There is no need for cars to move across intersections at sluggish rate, and Salt Lakes traffic officers certainly do not encourage rapid traffic. As a city grows, it must eliminate waste motion, and that adage applies to traffic as well as to other phases of the daily routine. Another growing handicap to motorists is methods of handling .traffic on the small-tow- n highways. There is no need to advocate reckless driving of cars, but Utahs traffic speed ' limits are quite antiquated. The state should have a minimum as well as a maximum speed law, for it is the slow, highway driver who is the menace to traffic today. Four wheel brakes, balloon tires, 10 improved automotive design have antiquated travel at less than 80 miles an hour and we might as well get used to it. Poor road conditions also are a disadvantage, but work is progressing along these lines and it is to be hoped that good road conditions will be available before the real heavy travel of summer. IAndy Talks of Airports. (POL. CHARLES A. LINDBERGH appeared before the joint congressional committee, which is studying airports and aviation needs, at a hearing early this week. The flying colonel, who certainly has visited more airports here and abroad than any other man in the world, was called by the committee to give his opinions on needs of the nation. Lindbergh observed that while there is now more private flying in .this country than abroad, not one American city has airports to compare with those of Europe. He stated, furthermore, that none 'of the existing American fields can be used as models for the My, my! Arent those pictures of Salmon P. His statements before that committee amount to nothing less than at clear indictment of present laxity in the United States. .His observations, too, should be more interesting in face of the fact that Salt Lake now is awakening to its position in regard to the air development. If Salt Lake City is wise, it will gather information on airports at Berlin, Paris and the other air centers of Europe. It will enjoin its service clubs to take an active part in a comprehensive survey of the tendencies of aviation arid in promotion of a progressive campaign for the city in regard to provision for air increase. When a man such as Lindbergh speaks, a. city faced so directly with the problem as is Salt Lake is unwise not to ponder and learn how far his words are meant to be heard. . -- The Queen of England went shopping but they were careful to keep the news from reaching the king..
