Salt Lake theatregoers, even the most skeptic of them, have pronounced the new Granada theatre one of the finest theatres in the western country. Ideally suited for the talkies, the Granada represents as well some of the most daring ideas in theatre decoration that have been brought here. As a matter of fact, the Granada compares favorably with many of the Coast theatres, in detail and general -- AS THE DESERT SONG The theatrical as well as musical event of the season is promised at the Paramount theatre for an entire week starting Sunday when Lillian Albertsons thrilling operetta, The l Desert Song will be presented. With a musical setting by Sigmund Romberg, composer of The Student Prince and Blossom Time, all that would be needed to make a rare The evenings entertainment of Desert Song are good voices. The company of nearly 100 players and singers that Miss Albertson will bring here is the same as has broken all records in California, and one which is said to be particularly rich sible, an ideal arrangement for the arrangement strikingly resembling Sid Graumans palatial Chinese talking showhouse. Deft blending of the antique and modern Spanish theme throughout has given the theatre interior a striking atmosphere. Velvet and damask drapes of red, burnt orange, black and gold and rose complete the color harmony. Complete replastering of the interior in spongy antique plaster has made perfect tonal effect pos SAILS XAKE , films- - Balcony effects, and a sensational touch to the stage with addition of a large procenium curtain are other features. The lobby is done in more bold style than the interior, feature Spanish mosiac tiling, huge urns, a marble statue and continuation of the modernistic lighting fixtures used throughout. STOWS The two leading performers, Perry Askam and Elvira Tanzi, can really sing. Askams rich, round baritone and Tanzis clear, sure soprano are well nigh in vocal qualities. ir-resista- ble. It is not an easy task to name which song will please local music One Alone, renlovers the most. dered by Askam, always claims half a dozen encores. So does the theme song of the operetta, entitled The Desert Song, done as duet by Askam and Tanzi. Then Ho!, the riding song of the Riffs, which exploits a remarkable male chorus of thirty, starts off the operetta with a swing that seems to lift every audi ence out of their seats. The Desert Song does not depend upon its music alone in its bid for popular favor. There is said to be a stirring plot to the operetta. It has to do with a picturesque tribe of Riffan warriors in the very heart of the desert, who keep the French Legion on the jump as they success- fully prey upon the rich for the benefit of the poor under the leadership of a mysterious Red Shadow.
