Show 8 (SHOT) E8I&EAKS 9 THE CITIZEN TTEIE TAPE GH5e?s Go mMoofo Salt Lakes golf professionals have locked up the doors to the indoor golf school and served notice to the weather man that so far as they are concerned, golf weather can arrive almost any time". The clubs themselves also have opened the gates, Jackie Burton, University of Utah track captain, and Rocky Mountain conference half mile champion, who has just revealed his marriage last winter to Miss Ruth Bertman. Cupid took Burton complete for the count, and the Ute ace has discontinued his studies at the state school. The Utes will be without a captain for the time being. EMsMfliic Get (Somme? The University of Utah finds itself in a rather unique position with the possession of three Rocky Mountain Conference titles or sectional titles within that organization, a position but rarely attained by any school. The Utah championships are the R. M. C. football championship, in which the Utes were coached to victory by Ike J. Armstrong ; the Western Division R. M. C. swimming championship, under Coach Charles Welch ; and the conference tennis championship,, coached by Theron Parmalee. The tennis championship of the Utes is unique. It is the last time that the full conference net title will be bestowed on any school. That is the result of a recent R. M. C. meeting which decided that only major competition would be decided on a conference basis. The sports thus honored are football, basketball and track. Baseball, tennis, wrestling, swim an (Smsmiras ming, and other kindred sports are relegated to state or division bracketing for deciding of championships. So the tennis championship won last June in Salt Lake is in Utah to stay. Under th. new ruling, Utah also wins the first sectional championship in swimming. Despite the presence on the B. Y. U. team of Bud Shields, national collegiate 220-yaand d champion, the Utes won out by a convincing margin. The football championship is the second Utah has had in three years, and stamps the U. of U. teams and Coach Ike J. Armstrong among the nations gridiron leaders. Utah also "is preparing to stage the conference track meet at the giant Ute stadium this year, in which the Crimson track men will make a very strong drive for a fourth title. The track team, however, is laboring under the handicap of the loss of its captain, Jackie Burton, who has discontinued school. rd 440-yar- and all that awaits resumption of the business of divot digging is the drying of the turf. Somewhat of a squabble is developing regarding the dates of the womens amateur tournament. The argument has been brought forth that at the date set, June 3 to 7, many of the women golfers are only partially acquainted with their games. It has been suggested, therefore, that the date of the tournament be postponed until sometime in August, when it is figured that all the ranking golfers wrill be ready for the tournament. In support of the contention that June is too early to gain an accurate tournament rating, the experience of last year need be recounted. The first major tournament for the women was the Fort Douglas invitational. If memory serves right, that w'as in June. Mrs. L. G. Shriver, 1927 womens champion, qualified easily enough but was put out in the first round by Mrs. A. H. Means, a hitherto unheard of golfer. Miss Mary Dooly, who later ascended to the championship, was another to take the count, going down in the third round, and leaving two practically unrated golfers in the final. It is a matter of note that neither of the latter two gained any great distinction later in the year, whereas the other two were the outstanding golfers, with perhaps another exception. And so it appears that the state golf association, when it goes into another huddle, had better amend the dates somewhat to suit the fairer sex. In the event that the date is changed, it is quite likely that Fort Douglas will stage its invitational joust on the dates first set for the state competition. Alex McCafferty, new Country Club professional, has established himself at the canyon course and expects to be pretty much on the job from now on. Fort Douglas golfers are eager to begin play on the old nine. They know that before the season is over they will be using two new holes and perhaps four or six. |
