Margaret Rinaldi. . . . - , . day-drea- m - THE TRAP FOR UNCLE SAM. Elliot Wadsworth has been trying to see what chances the United States might have in collecting the cost of maintaining our army upon the Rhine out of the reparations which Germany has paid over to the Allies. e He has been given a luncheon by French statesmen. The whisper is that he will be decorated with the ribbon the Legion of Honor. He has been listened to patiently and answered with flattery. But he is no nearer to getting that $225,000,000 from the Allies than he was before he defied indigestion to do its worst. The Allies of course, will not give up $225,000,000 merely upon request. It is not the way things are done abroad. The French press explains very frankly that it is desirable to have America very much determined to get the money. Then she would take a seat in the reparations commission. She would concern herself with making Germany pay the indemnities. She would get into the affair so deeply, it is argued, that she would have to back up the campaign in the Ruhr. All of which means that it will be a very long time before any of that 0225,000,000 spent upon the Rhine comes back across the Atlantic. The trouble of getting along without it is of smaller consequence than the troubles we would have to assume to get within eyeshot of the money. The Incident reveals the quality of that European comradeship which we are so loudly asked to invest in. As outsiders we are worked unmercifully by the suave politicians of those countries to whose rescue we went in 1917. Inside their fold we might be lucky if we escaped with our shirts.
