A V? Mormon Church Leader Dispels All Doubt as to Attitude Toward Industrial Development Chamber of Commerce Address of President Grant Clearly Asserts Present Position of Church Utah is endowed by nature to be an industrial empire. Brigham Young announced that this was an empire that some day would be teeming with industries all over the country. I have heard that the Mormon people fid not want the steel industry established here. Well, they might as well tell me I do not want to eat when I am hungry there is just about as taudi sense to it. I remember, from my earliest recollection, the efforts that have been made to establish all lands of industries in this section and to induce capital to come here to help us do it. Do you know that the grandfather of the man sitting here (pointing to George Albert Smith) was sent down to Cedar City years ago to look into the manufacturing of iron in that section of the country I believe before 1 was born? 1 just learned it from Charles W. Penrose, who will soon be 91 years old. He knows some things dating back a little while. We have an industrial empire here the lands are only partly developed. We have only scratched over the country, and we are gradually getting enterprises; from the ground that has been raising wheat and other things that could not be shipped far away on account of freight charges, we are going to raise sugar beets and other things that bring more wealth here. There are several, millions of acres of land yet susceptible of reclamation. There is a great variety of mineral wealth only partly developed. We have the greatest copper mine in all the world, and it is only a question of time before we will develop many great mines. The prospective development of the iron and steel industry is only indicative of the development awaiting the state. I believe this steel industry is going over now at last. I want to say that from the president of the Mormon church down, we are one and all in favor of it. I can talk from personal, individual knowledge when 1 say that John Taylor, Wilford Woodruff, Lorenzo Snow and Joseph F. Smith were in favor of it. A man came into my office this morning and said, It is being rumored around here that the Mormon people do not want this steel industry that they do not want to come in here. Just you put it down that that is incorrect. The great basin and the' basin of the Colorado river in which Utah lies, form a natural geographic unit of immense industrial possibilities, with the main outlets to the west. The tremendous and increasing population of southern California will find the two basins in which Utah lies their most desirable points of supply.... Keep that in your minds. We want to cultivate the west; we want to fail in love with the west. Remember we are a part of the west. Remember we want to build up the Twelfth federal district. Keep .. non-Mormo- ns aa a that in your minds. ftiiiiiiiiiiiiiuiiiiimiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiMniiiiiiiiinmniiiiiniiiiiiiminiiiiiiiiimiiiniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiniiiiiiiiiiiMiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiNiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiniiiiiimiiM |
