Show THE CITIZEN 8 Bamberger Leaves Party In Lurch OBSERVATION PLAN democratic party of Utah is going around with its head off and naturally is feeling a bit confused. The democrats were looking forward to the next campaign with confidence on the theory that as goes the nation, so doesnt. Utah. It was all arranged that Governor , Bamberger should continue to ride at the front of the procession, with his field marshals immediately behind at the head of troops of officeholders, the hoi polloi bringing up the rear on foot. In this orderly fashion the parade was to continue right through into the campaign of next year. But the governor suddenly dis- fpHE A 5iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii:iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii? it with more or less justice and, therefore, we shall call him no more Local Profiteers Gay As Hunt Continues beard of hanging profiteers in the morning, shooting them at rosy dawn or even escorting them to prison in the dusty after A AS anybody noon. The present investigation has been quite a merry event for our local profiteers. They rake in their profits and then of themselves read defenses in the newspapers. The lumber trust fleeces the homebuilder and the trust members de- i nounce the profiteer in food. Utah has an attorney general. We know this is a startling statement. Most people have forgotten that such a functionary exists. He is about as real as that lord high executioner of the comic opera Behold the Lord High Executioner! A personage of noble rank and , title A dignified and potent officer, Whose functions are particularly vital. Defer, defer, To the noble Lord High Executioner ! We have an attorney general, a nice, polite, sweet, harmless, Demo- cratic gentleman. He wouldnt have a grand Jury calied for the world. If one was called there would be ho evidence be- cause he has made no investigations. He has made no investigations because the sheriff wont give him any investigators. No one will help him investigate. Besides, he has no funds. The legislature should have provided him with funds, but it was tod busy trying to create a state insurance monopoly and pass' laws ostensibly directed against grinding corporations. The Democratic legislature might have shown a most creditable radicalism if it had provided a fund for hunting down profiteers. But it had gone wild with freak radicalism. It had fantastic hobbies and visionary schemes of reform. It did not have the time or the wisdom to do anything bo sensible as to provide a fund that would assist the attorney general to make investigations so that when a grand jury should be called, evidence .might be presented of profiteering, ofn grafting and other fenses that we have always with us. well-know- The mild and estimable; gentle and kindly attorney general, lover of peace and quiet, can blame the legislature and the sheriff. We know he can do names. We suggest, however, that there is much information that he might obtain merely for the asking. Also he might shake his Jovian locks in a menacing manner now and then just as if he intended to do something something quite ferocious. If the public really wishes to know who is the most flagrant of profiteers, The Citizen will reveal the secret. It is the retail dealer. The retail dealer does not do much trading outside his home state and the federal government leaves him to the authorities of the city, county and state. And these authorities never whisper one word of reproach against the retailer. A week ago wholesalers of butter said that they were selling butter to the retailer for 58 cents a pound and that the retailer was charging 70 for that brand of butter. Thus challenged, the retailer did not reply. He was too busy making his 15 per cent on each pound of butter. He bought his butter and sold it every day. It was a daily turnover 15 per. cent a day, six days in the week and sometimes on Sun- mounted The field marshals, seeing him about to return to terra firma, shouted to him to hold fast. The governor alighted on both feet and shouted back: Thats what Im doing. And now the directors of the democratic party are denouncing him outrageously. They regard him as a deserter and would court martial him if Just when the party was marching forward in the finest fettle they could. retailer. They had arranged to keep him in the saddle until next year and then unwere horse him. They meant, so to speak, to have him challenge all comers until the gong sounded and then to shove forward the chosen defender of the title. The governor suspected something of the sort and decided that he would escape a lot of worry and annoyance if he announced his retirement from the political field far in advance of the convention. Of course, it was a shock to the conspirators. They did not want him to run again; in fact, they had talked about it quite freely and perhaps some of the conversation drifted js At all events he suddenly left the party in the lurch. He disarranged the plans of the leaders and way.
