Show THE HIGH COST OF DYING consider the high cost of dying and target forget for a few minutes the high cost of living each year more than one thousand five hundred persons die in utah from preventable causes the cost of these fifteen hundred unnecessary funerals alone probably amounts to more than seventy five thousand dollars or a bout about tour four times the annual appropriation to the state board of health most of these deaths are preceded by long costly illnesses which must be added to the high cost of dying the people of utah probably pay out each year on account of these unnecessary deaths at least one fourth million dollars we must take account also of 0 tile the value to the community and to the state of these lives about which we seem so indifferent what is the life of a man or woman or child worth la in cold blooded figures of dollars and cents A conservative estimate puta put the hie value of an adult workman at five Jio housand usand dollars that means that every able bodied workman is worth on an all average of five thousand dollars to the state stale tor for the wealth he can produce since many of these who die through their own neglect are not producers it is estimated that the average economic value of these lives Is seventeen hundred dollars tills this amounts to more than two and one half million dollars waste thus it appears that the people of utah lose each year about three million dollars thru needless deaths arid and tills cost of dying Is only a part of tile the toll of preventable disease i there are probably about ten cases of disabling cases of sickness for each death from preventable causes probably one halt half million dollars is spent each year in the care of these cases 11 wo must take into account also tile the loss of productive labor due to needless disease every day that a workman is idle on account of sickness he and his family are the poorer by tile the amount lie he should have earned that day also the state is the poorer by the amount lie ho should have produced an investigation of this subject was recently made in the city of milwaukee which has a population about equal to the population of the whole of utah it was estimated that tile the workmen of milwaukee lose annually more than three million dollars in wages alone on account oc sickness there are no statistics on this subject tor for utah but one million dollars wage loss annually thru preventable sickness would be a conservative estimate tor for tills this state the yearly money loss to the people of utah from preventable sickness and death is probably more than five million dollars more than ten dollars tor for every man woman and child in the state far greater even Is the cost in suffering and sorrow which cannot be expressed in figures and tor for which no money balilo value can compensate pen sate there was a time when men might cold their hands and say this is the hand of providence we are helpless and blameless but not so today this terrible toll of sickness and death more than one third the total amount I 1 V 4 OR 1 0 ftfe I 1 mcf FROM civilization alta theatre monday and tuesday february and of sickness sich ness and death in the state can be prevented do you want to stop this tremendous loss of wealth and human welfare it ran can be done somo some day it will be done why not do it now succeeding articles of this series will tell how it can can be accomplished |
