UNION GRIDDERS-Unio- n's football before Grantsville knew what had happened. Duchesne Community school fall Union, Duchesne lose, Altamont squeezes by Altamont was the only winner in football action last week. The Altamont Longhorns were the only county high school to capture a victory last week as they squeezed by Union was in the Green River the all way before falling to game and Duchesne was Grantsville 18-ambushed by the East Carbon Vikings 26-2- 8 47-0- . This week Union has a bye, Altamont school, plays the number one ranked North Summit, and Duchesne travels to school. San Juan to play that Altamont was almost upset as the improving Green River Pirates rallied after being down by two touchdowns to take a lead and hold it til the fourth 2-- quarter. In that game the Longhorns drew first blood on a 14 yard pass play from Randy Farnsworth to Joe Fieldsted. Ken Ausin the converted halfback (he has been playing center) took in another pass from Farnsworth. At that point Coach Bill Manzanares started putting in some of the subs for experience and Green River scored three big TDs to take the lead. In comes the starters, TD in the third by Ausin and in the fourth by Fieldsted and the Longhorns were headed home winners. Defensively Coach Manzanares liked the work of Rick Lucero, Lloyd Barton, all fairly and Ronnie Farnsworth, newcomers to the starting positions. Offensive guards Tony Carroll and Kirk drew praise. Freshman Christensen quarterback Farnsworth is showing improvement every game. Union's fired-uCougars almost upset the visiting Cowboys and quickly set about impressing the homecoming crowd with Bruce Dart returning a punt 63 yards for a TD. Bart Morrell then put in the extra two points. The next time Union had the ball they drove almost again to the Cowboy goal, a fumble on the two yard line stopped that and the Cowboys took command. Never, until the last few minutes, was Union completely out of the game. Coach Dave Corey had high praise for Terry West and Phillip Betts on defense and Bart Morrell and Betts on offense. Coach Corey and his assistants voted Bruce Dart as the player of the week for his outstanding performance. Coach Ed Browning said his offense, in spite of not scoring, did show some improvement. This week Altamont played North Summit Wednesday afternoon, but after-pres- s deadline. The Longhorns were generally rated a three touchdown underdog in spite of playing at home. Duchesne plays San Juan this Friday in San Juan. San Juan has not been very impressive this year and has only one region win, but playing at home, should be considered the choice in picking winners. Coach Browning said San Juan will have a good sized fullback and a fine throwing quarterback. So he is looking for alol of passes. The Eagles will be minus the services of Randy Hall who was injured and will be out for the season. Union does not play this week, but takes on Morgan a week from Friday. REGION NINE W .
