Senior pitcher Tyler Henderson started and went the distance for the Darts, striking out seven while walking only one. Offensively, Davis was led by the entire top of its order with Greg Nelson, John Connors, Trevor Denham and Casey Hill all getting critical hits to generate die runs needn battle. ed to edge Kearns in this Denham was the only Dart to get two hits, going two for force with a triple and two RBIs. Davis now has a 14-- 9 record for foe 5-- A 3-- left-hand- ed inter-regio- year. By winning Davis earns foe right to travel Orem to Orem to take on foe Tigers, who had a first round bye in the tournament In fact, knowing that foe Tigers were waiting to play the winner was a key in the pregame strategic planning for both teams. Kearns apparently elected to save its pitcher, and almost certain professional draft pick, Jeremy Lambert, in the hopes foal it could sneak by foe Darts in foe first round. Unfortunately, foe strategy backfired Davis, ed all-sta- on foe other hand stayed with its regular rotation and sent its winningest pitchers Henderson, to the mound With foe win, Henderson is now 2 on the year. In the early going it looked like the Kearns strategy might pay off. The Cougars took a 0 lead in the top of the second inning with Nick Williams scoring on the front end of a double steal. Although foe Darts successfully tagged otd Williams teammate, Chad Clark, to end foe inning, Williams crossed foe plate before the tag to score the run, Davis finally got things going in foe third inning. In foe top half of the inning Henderson struck out the side to give foe Darts some momentum coming to the plate. The top of the Davis order then reeled off four straight hits. Leadoff hitter Nelson singled to right field followed by a sharp line drive to left by center fielder Connors. Denham knocked in his first of two runs on the day with a single up foe middle. Casey Hill followed immediately with a single to right field driving in Connors with foe run. One out later a walk to Trav Bowen loaded the bases, but Williams, foe Kearns pitcher, struck out foe next Davis batter and then got out of foe inning on a groundout to first base. 9-- ad Davis held on to its 3-- 1 lead until Lambert came up to bat for Kearns in the top half of the sixth. With one out and no one on base, he drilled a Henderson curve ball well over the fence in left field for a home run to bring foe Cougars within one, Henderson maintained his cool and quickly retired foe next two hatters to end the inning. Still nursing a 2 lead, foe Darts survived one final scare in foe top of the seventh. With his teammates in foe field backing him up, Henderson got two quick outs, the first on a tremendous defensive play by shortstop Hill diving to his left to take a hit away front Williams. Connors then ran down a line drive to center for the second out But pinch hitter John Jones ripped a single to right to give the Cougars life. Wade Russell followed with an infield single and suddenly Kearns had two men on base and the top of their order coming up. Henderson bme down, however, and struck out the Kearns leadoff batter to end the game and secure foe victory for Davis.
