Show page A 10 Friday, September 13, 1996 Davis County Clipper Darts plan to finish at top in volleyball Sports Shorts : Eaglewood host tournament - The KAYSVILLE Lady Darts are coming off a season that saw them take third in state, so the only other goal they have is to be the state champs. This will be the first year in six years that the Darts will be without one of the Barton sisters as both Brenda and Brooke are now part of the Lady Utes volleyball program at the University of Utah. Leading the Lady Darts will be head coach Jamie Fox whose team has high expectations for the upcoming year. Fox has some holes to fill that always happens with graduation. To fill those holes you need players with a lot of experience. Wendy Dale, Jane Watts and Jessica Purdy will plug those holes with that much needed veteran leadership. Along with Dale, Watts and Purdy the Darts have added Emily Christensen who has moved to Kaysville from Seattle, Wash. Christensen will be playing middle blocker for the Lady Darts and will try to help the Darts accomplish their goals for the year. Last year we had a good year, but we always want to improve, Fox said. This year as always we want to win the region championship, then get a good seeding for state. We feel good about what we have, although we are rebuilding, we still have some things that we want to work on. We want to be able have rallies and be able to hold onto those leads. This is really important to us. In looking at the region this year, Fox predicts that Region 2 will again be a tough one to win. I think that Skyline and Highland will the teams to beat. They are really strong this year. All three of Coach Foxs starters Dale, Watts and Purdy are in sync with Fox concerning the season. Dale Explains that she wants to be a positive leader for the younger players. I think what Brooke Barton said is best that volleyball is more a mental game than physical game. The tournament will be a scramble format and will include close to the hole, long drive and putting two-perso- n, competitions. Monday, Sept. 23 will feature a scramble with separate flights for men, women and seniors and the entry fee is two-pers- . $100. The entry fee includes green fees, cart and a beautiful Hall of Fame sweatshirt. To enter the senior division both players must be 55 years of age or older. Tuesday, there will be a separate mixed scramble. The entry fee for that day is also $100 per game. Watts has many goals that will help the team. We need to assist the other members to be consistent when we are playing and to concentrate on our goals. Purdy feels that this team needs to stick together in the tough games and like Dale they want to have fun. We want to get that much needed momentum and play tough in all the games, because the league is very tough. These three leaders have not just been blowing smoke concerning getting better personally and as a team. They have committed themselves to conditioning not only in running but also in the weight room pumping iron to make themselves better players. Along with the returning seniors Davis will have juniors with a lot of varsity playing time. Fox said that Jodi Cook and Melanie Darrohn will give the Lady Darts more experience. and includes green fees, cart and Hall of Fame sweatshirt. For those playing both days the entry fee is $200. Flights and competition within the flights will be determined by the low handicap of n the team and winners will be determined by net two-perso- scores within the respective flights. For example, if a man entered in the mens division has a 7 handicap and is playing with a player with a 15 handicap the team will compete in the 2 Flight and will play with a team handicap of 7 which will .be subtracted from the gross team score. , t V Z 1 a, l4 ' i 1 v " Xt , n if I 7tt) it' U $ v k - f 1 - F' ''4 i if ' . For something a little unique, Braves will take plenty of scalps this year University of Utah Coach Ron McBride says that as soon as a football team starts thinking theyre pretty good they get pretty bad fast. Layton, too many mistakes, but I dont think Layton is as bad as Bountiful is good. The Braves almost eclipsed their e scoring record with their 57 points. The record is 58 points in 1977 against Sky View. Bountiful is strong defensively and features a bunch of weapons on offense. Not that the Layton Lancers are the Skyline Eagles. But I dont think the Skyline Eagles could have pounded the Lancers any more than the Braves did. Layton was not sharp, but sometimes a good team can make a mediocre team look worst than they are. It was a bad game for consider a single shot rifle. Viewmont at Pleasant Grove is a pick-egame. Not good friends The first bout is over and Bountiful scored a decision. On Tuesday the Braves hosted the defending 5A state soccer champs Davis and came away with a victory on a goal from Kristy Detton. It is the Darts goal this season to win Region 2, something they didnt do last year; and one of their problems is Bountiful. The Braves were region champs last m -0 -0 year. The Darts are noted for their aggressive, sometimes rough play. Bodies were flying Tuesday in the second region game of the season. If you think girls soccer is a finesse, sport, think again. Bountiful is ranked as the top team in the state according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Brighton is second, Bonneville third, West Jordan fourth and Bingham fifth. Close games Saturday Southern Methodist won its first game last year and then lost all the rest. The Mustangs are already better this year with a 0 record with wins over Tulsa and Arkansas. SMU hosts Utah Saturday and this should be a close game despite the Mustangs lackluster performance the past few years after the NCAA gave them the death penalty. Some teams from Texas can rebuild fast. Oddsmakers pick Utah by 5 in this shootout in Dallas. Speaking of shootouts, fans should expect some points Saturday in Seattle. BYU has a knack for scoring and BYU opponents have a knack for scoring as well. Washington is picked to win it by 4. 48-4- 4 sounds about right. Oct. 2-- nfle scope. This scope has a 56mm objective (front) lens that gathers light for early morning and dusk hunting. The light gathering capability will give you an extra half hour of shooting time. The scope is a 3 x 12 variable power and is very impressive. Speaking of optics, hunters should always carry a pair of binoculars when going afield. Redfield, which has been making scopes and sights for almost 90 years, also makes binoculars for hunters. The pair I will be using this year is rubber coated, and has a built-i- n compass. With the glasses hanging around your neck, all it takes is a downward glance to see the compass. Every hunter needs a good knife. The market is filled with cheap knives, but to get a good one that will last a lifetime, you will have to put out a little money. I have packed an Old Timer folding hunter for 23 years. The sheath is practically worn through, but I never go afield unless I have the knife on my belt. I also carry a smaller lock blade Old Timer in my pocket. It never hurts to have a spare. If you are planning on new boots for the season, get them now and start wearing them. It is much easier to break them in a little at a time by wearing them on weekends, than it is to suffer through the breaking in on the first day of the hunt. Check out some of the new hunting clothing that is on the market. The new synthetic fleece products are warm and will wick moisture away from your skin. But even the new space age materials have a hard time comparing to wool. I picked up a pair of wool pants at a surplus store and they have survived numerous winter days, washings, and hunting trips. Your list of essential items might include maps, hats, canteens, first aid kits, and probably a few things you have thought of . If you start now, you can have everything ready before you rush out the door for the hunt. Besides preparing now is part of the fun, and a good way to make the season last a little longer. |
