Show Davis County Clipper Friday, JENSEN continued from front From there, he moved to Helper, where he became an auto mechanic. "I bought a 1916 Model T Ford and learned how to repair it on my own. went to the dealer and he put me to work. I fussed around with automobiles from 1923 to 43. He worked at four auto shops before opening his own. But with time he had to give up 1 but also his fathers, telling of a poor farmer trying to make ends meet with six boys and a girl to raise. Jensen remembers his childhood. There were some pretty rough times in those days. We had to take Salinas Canyon to Salt Lake City. It was a six day trip to go to the store and buck." Jensen's siblings left home when he was still young, leaving him to do everything there was to do on the farm. He got his high school education at the Emery Stake Academy, a schtxil operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-da- y Saints, but it took him five years to make it f rom 9th through 2th grade because he missed a year due to the farm work. He helped take care of 65 head of cattle, 12 to 15 milk cows and eight to 10 horses everyday, besides attending the school, where he served as student body president two years. As a student, didnt like English and didnt like the teacher." He recalls being the only 8th grader in town and the teacher would stay after school to take him through the curricu1 1 lum. After graduation he decided forming him. and at 20, he went to work in the coal mines. He said mine workers were supposed to be 2 . but he was hired early. There he worked as an electrician. Jensen served in the Army during World War I in the radio section. I didnt want to carry a gun," he said. But it was nine months before the Amiy tixtk him. When they did, he was stationed at Fortress Monroe, Va for training, and while there, the war ended and he was released early. He returned to Utah and to mining where he remained five years. But problems arose with the labor union. They brought in these Russians. They couldnt speak English and tixik everything we had," he said. He left mining after seeing three of his friends shot by the outsiders who had come in to run the union. wasnt the life for the auto repair business because gasoline fumes were giving him headaches. During those years of "fussing Jensen had a chance to work on Ab Jenkins' Mormon Meteor as it set records on the Bonneville Salt Flats. After leaving auto repair. Jensen worked for the Department of Agriculture's Survey Department, as an instrument maker and camera repairman for the new technology of aerial photography. There, he also worked in the lab, doing everything but developing the film. They had one man to do that and no one else was allowed to mix the chemicals, he said. He also trained pilots in getting those photos. At 60 years old, I was conscripted as an indicator man for aerial flights and surveys and transferred to Hill Air Force Base, where he worked in a number of areas from fixing cameras to maintaining flight instruments. It was when he went to work at Hill that Jensen bought his present home in Bountiful, on a two and a half acre lot, where he planted 260 apple trees. Today, an apartment complex sits on some of the land, and the Jensens are down to one and a half acres. From the aerial department Jensen took over quality control at the base. He said he did the job so well, I kicked myself out of a job. By then the Korean War was underway and Jensen was put in charge of cannibalizing odds and ends aircraft to make the older planes used in the conflict flyable. He got 38 aircraft flyable, but all were shot dow n over Korea. After the war, he was put in charge of VIP automobiles, stored at the base. As time went on, the cars were left in storage, so they were stripped of military necessities and sold as regular autos. Some were turned over to the Army base at Tooele. Jensen retired, sort of. in 1965 after 22 years at Hill. But he didnt settle back into a rocking chair. He opened a lawn mower repair shop which he ran for two or three years. "But it was too seasonal, he complained. He continued to garden, but now I get wore out, he said. Until he began to have problems with his hands, and his eyesight began to fail, he enjoyed painting landscapes. He learned to paint by attending night classes at the University of Utah. Several examples of his work hang throughout the couples house and at the Senior Citizen's Center in Bountiful. He continued to drive until he was 97, when his feet turned numb and he was unable to tell if he was pressing on the gas or brake pedal. Nevertheless, in honor of his birthday, Jensen received a special license plate from the state, which the Jensen's dont have to pay for this year.
