Since the legislators and some landowners seem to ignore wildlife biologists advice and limit hunting to as little as three days in some areas, sportsmen have to look to a couple of alternatives to leaving the dog in the kennel for another year. One would be to go out of state where the seasons last for 30 to 60 days or longer. Another is to arrange a commercial hunt. While some might consider pen raised pheasants less than sporting challenge, the experience of commercial hunting has its merit. Basically, instead of catch and release, it is release and find. Because of the terrain and crops, the birds tend to stay in the isolated area. Probably the most publicized and popular club is the recently expanded Pleasant Valley south of Myton, which until just a couple of years ago was called Hickins Chickens. They have acquired considerable farm property which offers a wide variety of terrain to hunt. As with most clubs, a charter membership fee of about $200 is required and then a minimum advance yearly purchase of pheasants at from about $10-- 15 each. Interestingly, clubs that were located closer to Davis County such as Bailey Lake west of the Salt Lake Airport, another in Uintah at the mouth of Weber Canyon and one near Bingham Canyon are no longer operating.
