Show I m3 4 ml Ufa Mmters head to hills for '95 deer hunt Mike Hemingway Sports Writer Saturday morning, with the dawn- ing of the sun, thousands of Utah hunters will be in the hills for the beginning of the annual deer hunt. The weather is expected to be favorable for the hunters, and the rebounding deer herds are anticipated to provide good to excellent hunter success. A mild winter and a good spring have contributed to the prospects for a much improved deer hunt in Utahs northern region. This past winter was easy on the deer herds, and last years fawns got through with low mortality rates. In addition, the wet spring encour- aged tremendous vegetation growth and left the deers range in good condition. Does with fawns have done very well because of the excellent nutrition, and this years fawns are thriving. Archery hunters, who began hunting in August, reported higher success rates than past years. One disadvantage they faced was the heavy vegetation and high grass that grew this spring. There have not been any significant storms to knock the leaves off the trees, and hunters will find that stalking and spotting deer may be difficult. The of Wildlife Division Resources is reporting that there are numerous small bucks available to be taken by hunters. Since many of the bucks will not be sporting prominent head gear, hunters will need to be extra careful in selecting their targets. By carefully watching the herds with binoculars or spotting scopes, hunters will be able to find bucks that may otherwise be missed. Although this years hunt is expected to be much improved over 4 cue operations much easier, should they become lost or injured. Other items that come in handy on hunting trips include a survival blanket, knife sharpening stone, toilet paper, a bone saw, string to tie on a tag, and a pair of gloves to wear while dragging an animal. These can be stored in a backpack or fanny pack along with the survival kit, first aid kit, and high ener, gy snacks. Modem technology has provided some additional items that can be very useful to hunters. A cellular phone is a great way to stay in contact with civilization in the case of an emergency. These phones can communicate from many areas in the local Global mountains. Positioning Satellites can provide It seems like I just packed away the orange vests, cleaned the rifles, and sorted out my fanny pack, but it is time to get everything out again and go hunting. The 1995 General Deer Hunt opens Saturday morning and I hope you are ready. the last couple of years, Utahs hunters are still one or two years away from the excellent hunting that they have enjoyed in the past Hunters should make a list, check it twice if they want 1995 rifle deer hunt to be nice The opening of the 1995 General Deer Hunt is just hours away, and anxious hunters are checking their equipment in anticipation for the big day Those who have carefully prepared will have a safe and enjoyable hunt. Others may find themselves in less than desirable conditions, wishing they had brought along some extra items from home. To help avoid that problem, here is a check list for hunters to review before they head to the hills. All hunters must have certain essential items These include a firearm with the correct bullets, a knife, and the proper license and permits. Hunters must have their license and permit in their possession while hunting. A hunter who forgets any of these, has ended his hunt before it began, and will spend opening day driving back home to find them. Other critical items that should be taken include binoculars, a piece of rope, a spare knife, a survival kit, and a first aid kit. The binoculars will help spot game. A rope comes in very handy when dragging out an animal. A spare knife is cheap insurance against a lost, broken, or dull blade. A survival kit and first aid kit are critical should a hunter become lost, injured, or have to spend the night in the wilds. A compass and map of the area being hunted will not only help in planning a hunt, but will help hunters find their way if lost. Studying a topographical map can also help one discover new areas to look for game. Before leaving home, hunters should write down detailed instructions as to where they are going and when they expect to return. They should also let others in their party know where they are headed when leaving camp. TTiis will make res Few trophy bucks out there; Several small ones available signals to GPS units that will help hunters know exactly where they are and the direction they need to go to return to a hunting location or find their vehicle. When hunting with a partner, a pair of walkie talkies or mobile radios will make it easy to stay in touch. Hunters should plan for all This year, the forecast is for much improved hunting. The fawn crops of the past couple of years have done well, and the Division of Wildlife Resources is reporting that they are seeing numerous small bucks. Last year, almost every doe I saw was accompanied by two fawns When a doe has twins, one is typically a male and the other is a female. If half of the fawns I saw last year are bucks, it should be fairly easy to fill a tag, if you are willing to settle for less than a trophy. The challenge on opening morning will be to find the deer. Unlike trophy bucks, the smaller. bucks tend to stay in amongst the does and fawns. If you are looking to fill your tag with tasty venison, find some does and open your eyes. The smaller bucks will be in the same area. Taking a trophy will be another story. The deer that would typically have grown four point racks did not survive the harsh winter we had a couple of years ago. A whole year class of deer was killed, and most of the bucks in that class would be EEB respectable wall hangers by now. This doesnt mean that there arent trophies to be found. Some older bucks survived that harsh winter, and have now grown to true trophy proportions, They are there for those who are willing to hunt. The deer are scattered throughout their range. We havent had enough snow at high elevations to bunch them up or push them down, so you can look high or low. Some friends were out looking for deer the other evening and found that when they spotted one deer, they generally saw several. The deer they saw were in higher elevations, near a skyline drive. On the other hand, one was down in my garden last night and ate the leaves off my pepper plants. The deer can also be found at lower elevations. If you are interested in a trophy buck, keep in mind that some of the largest deer in the state live where they can overlook the cities. The canyons of the Wasatch Front contain huge deer, but they are also difficult to hunt because of the rugged terrain. Getting one wont be easy. Each winter I watch numerous giant bucks that have survived the hunt. They cautiously move onto their winter range, which is the hills behind my house, and I can see them throughout the snowy months. Last year there was a monster five point buck and several very respectable four pointers who wandered around the foothills. This year they will be even bigger. If you are well prepared, plan ahead, and have a little luck, you just might be one of those who fills their tag. But even if you dont find a trophy, have fun trying. Thats what the hunt is all about anyway. mH? '05)& CSC) & (M (8ed Oime Qzna SMbnk (SssflsJtEGIb Introducing Avalons weather conditions.
