The Davis junior shot a par 72 last week at the 5A State Tournament for the lop score. He said he would have preferred a team victory. KRISTEL WHITTEN Viewmont Soccer Whitten has had a strong year as goalie for the Viewmont Vikes. Last week she had a test when she had to dig in and knock away shots in a shootout with Bountiful. The Vikes prevailed and Viewmont won the region title. WOODS CROSS The Logan Grizzlies had a chance to tie the game with Woods Cross early in the second half of Wednesdays quarterfinal game when they were awarded a direct free kick, but a brilliant stop by Wildcat goal keeper Jenny Waldron saved the day for the Cats. The Wildcats went on to defeat the northern Utah squad 1 and advance 3-- to the semifinals next Monday at Cottonwood High School. The Cross will face Sky View at 3:45 p.m. The Bobcats are the number three team from Region 5. Saving the PK (penalty kick) pepped us up, said Woods Cross coach Kevin Rigby. Soon after, the Wildcats gained some breathing room when Celeste 2-- Collins made a slick move on a Logan defender to advance the ball to Shauna Gurr. Gurr sprinted down the left side of the field and fired a hard shot at the Logan keeper. The ball rebounded off the keeper and Melissa Mayo was on top of it to knock it in for the Wildcats third goal. I joked with Melissa about not being a great finisher. She told me she was going to go in and score a goal. Shes an excellent player, Rigby said. The coach said his team was not as sharp as he had hoped. Im puzzled. We have a few kinks to work out this week in practice. We made some mistakes on defense, he said. Rigby said his team is due to put a full game together and play a great game.
