Gladys won the coveted Sappho Statue, created by the renowned Cherie Huber Winning the statue (pictured with Gladys) is the highlight of her writing career. She captured that honor by taking first place in the Romantic Love Poem Category at the 1995 Utah State Poetry Festival for her poem When I Return. Stoker Elementary, Bountiful Junior High and St. Marys Academy, where she learned to When I Return I will return when all the buds are bursting And lilac perfume spills a clinging scent; Especially when tulip cups are thirsting And lark 's trill echoes your content. Oh! The family later moved to Rigby, Idaho where Gladys graduated from High School. She earned bachelors at the degree in English a Agricultural College in Logan (now USU). She taught elementary school in Salt Lake and at Bountiful Junior High where she was also librarian. She married L. Earl Burnham in 1930. They raised three children and she worked as a substitute teach during those years. She and her two sons were owners of Barnes Gift Shop in Bountiful for eight years, where she worked part time.
