It would be better if we all died before it hit us. Actually, Alzheimers is not a factor of aging. While most people who have it are over 65, that does not mean people 65 and older can expect it to develop at some point in their lives. It is a sickness, not a byproduct of the aging process. Some facts to keep in mind: Habitual memory loss or confusion are not part of the normal aging process. If they occur, they may be symptoms of Alzheimers, or a related disease, or they may indicate a reaction to medication. Alzheimers develops slowly, often over many years. There are no lab tests, as yet, that can identify Alzheimers. Therefore, its a good idea not to jump to any hasty diagnosis. As Ive pointed out before in this column, the symptoms with associated Alzheimers may be due to heart and typically thyroid problems, strokes, depression and various neurological disorders. Some medications, or drug interactions, can produce similar symptoms. Most of these problems are treatable Therefore, all tests should be taken to rule out other causes before deciding on a diagnosis of Alzheimers. 1993 bv King Featur1 |
