After graduating, served an LDS mission in the Brazil South Mission where he was district leader and zone leader. Upon his return, he began his studies at the University of Utah. At that time, the artificial heart project was in its infancy at the university and Clinton was one of the first calf sitters. Later when he entered the College of Medicine, he was given the Outstanding Student Research Award for his work on artificial heart and platelet function. In 1980, as a major in the U.S. Air Force, he became director of the emergency room at Travis AFB, Bountiful Memorial Art. Co.
