Show DAVIS COUNTY CLIPPER Tuesday, August 17. 1993 B1 PORTS MEM Volleyball heads back to the beach By JAY TAYLOR Sports Writer So whats hot this summer? It's the sand wherever you find it in Davis County, with volleyball nets sprouting from pits in parks, backyards, campgrounds and resorts like Lagoon and Cherry Hill. While the area can't boast of a "Muscle Beach," the "in" crowd and the beach look and atmosphere is evident. Beach volleyball doubles (two-playteams) is on the scene with stretched cord boundary lines, fluorescent balls, caps with turned up visors, tanned hides and bare er feet. Volleyball has long been a favorite activity of picnics and Practice begins in football and volleyball athletes participating began practicing Monday in preparation for the upcoming season. The autumn sports season officially gets under way later this month. High school SPORTLIGHT family gatherings (sometimes with little resemblance to the official game). If you've watched any serious players on outdoor courts this summer you have to be struck with the sophisticated skill level required for doubles and with the competitive atmosphere (whether the players are men or women). No backyard "jungle" rules are evident, either. Rules for outdoor volleyball arc basically the same as the indoor game, although the most obvious option for outdoor play is the (occasionally three) team. An official outdoor ball is required which has a softer bounce and feel and more prominent scams. Any part of the body (including feet) may contact the ball. On hard driven spikes there is considerable latitude in what would be called a carry in indoor play. There arc also no open hand tips. Obviously these adaptations allow for sustained play with only two or three players on the same court area. While sand courts have been used at Lagoon and Cherry Hill for a number of years, only within the last year or two have the cities responded to the game's popularity by installing courts at places like Nicholl's Park in Fruit Heights, Shepard Lane Park in Farmington, and several parks in the Bountiful area. For tournaments, temporary courts are set up on grass as well in order to accommodate the large number of players in the two-play- Centerville All-Sta- rs 12-year-- old Invitational tournament Aug. 4. UOVA tourneys (there were 37 on the schedule for the summer) are held at a variety of sites, from a "Beach Fcst" at Saltair to a "Surf 'n Slam at Raging Waters. Park City's recent Arts Festival sponsored a major men's and women's event as part of the celebration there. The Davis Open took place August 14 at Davis High in Kaysville. Some will extend their summer into the last weekend in September for the Canyonlands tourney in Moab. Dr. Ricardo Martinez, assistant professor of surgcrycmcrgcncy medicine, says that a variety of home service disruptions, ranging from power failures to earthquakes, can he used with the same gear and supplies that the family dusts off each summer for a day or two or a week at a campsite. "Particularly if you have young children, you'll w'ant to be able to provide warm meals quickly in the event of a power failure. And that gas stove that works so well in the mountains or by the lake will do just as fine a job at home. Just be sure to use it outside the house in a area to avoid the well-ventilat- possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning." SPIKING IN THE SAND: economy. Besides being great recreation, fishing is big business! In 1992 Utah had 443,150 paid fishing license holders, an increase of nearly eight percent over the previous year. Sportsmen and women paid over $6. 1 million in license fees in 1992. Nearly one third tourists (136,972) of all license holders are who enjoy Utah's excellent fishing. License revenue by law is retained within the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources to pay for current operating expenses benefiting the fishing public. Those fishing public buy vehicles, boats, fuel. non-reside- nt fishing equipment, sporting goods, food, lodging and in this recreation. Martinez cautions that they should drained approximately yearly (use the old water on your lawn if you have one) and the water replaced to ensure freshness. Don't forget that a water purification kit used for camping or backpacking can be used at home if the water quality there becomes compromised, he notes. The same first aid kit you throw into the car before leaving for the mountains, seashore or lakefront, should be stocked and ready for the home emergency as well. Martinez suggests. Lanterns and flashlights, along with a supply of matches kept with the camping gear can fight darkness after a power failure. Remember to store gas and kerosene in properly sealed containers which should be kept away from direct sunlight, electricity or extreme heat. "While nobody welcomes an emergency, an unsettling incident such as an earthquake can be made less stressful for all members of the family with proper planning. It's even less stressful if you-a- nd particularly your childrcn-ha- ve some familiar gear to remind you of last summer's camping trip and some pleasant memories," Martinez says. Sciatica causes irritation of nerve cord Kctchum, the world champion hull fighter was at the Della Center for the Days of '47 Rodeo. When a bull rider is thrown, Lloyd jumps between the bull and the rider, and distracts the bull as the cowboy runs to safety. Last year he was hit in the back by a bull and felt a sudden sharp shooting pain down the hack ol his leg. A tingling feeling and numbness persisted. He just experienced an attack of sciatica. Championship Tournaments CO-E- August 23-2- 8 MENS: August 14-2WOMENS: August 23-21 8 I AA Sciatica is irritation of the sciatic nerve cord, which branches off the spinal cord in your lower back, it runs beneath your buttock muscles and continues all the way down the back of your leg down to the heel and into your toes. Pain usually originates in your back and radiates down but can flare up anywhere along the length of the nerve. Sciatica can lead to muscle weakness and even loss of bowel or bladder function. The most common cause of sciatica is a bulged or herniated disc that pinches the nerve as it exits the spinal cord. Discs are constructed like jelly donuts that lie between the bones that absorb shock. Discs begin to degenu ale in 20.s and become the biggest problem in the thiid and fourth decades of life. The majority of people who have disc problems are likely s, and overweight, have an occupation that involves prolonged sitting or heavy lifting. However it is not uncommon for anyone to develop a herniated disc. Disc problems are diagnosed by your doctor and pain usually subsides with ice, medication and specific low back extension exercises. The majority of people can be helped with physical therapy and very few have to undergo surgery. Lloyd was given a series of low back extension exercises which took the pain away and allowed him to continue on the rodeo circuit pain free. Not all vases ol sv let iv pain are caused by damaged discs. The pain can be caused by anything mid-thirtie- that puts pressure on or irritates the nerve. Other causes may be bone spurs, bursitis, infection and pregnancy. Another, less common cause of sciatica is Piriformis syndrome. This occurs when a muscle in your buttocks called the piriformis is too tight and compresses the sciatic nerve. With piriformis syndrome you do not experience back pain, but a pain that starts in the midbuttocks and travels down the back of one leg. People that get this usually have tight hamstrings and may sit too long on a hard surface. Men get it when their wallet presses on the sciatic nerve. This piriformis syndrome is less serious than a disc injury and can he successfully treated with a few simple stretching exercises. |
