Last year, the cardinals, bishops, priests, religious and laity of the U.S. offered 1.2 million masses for Pope John Paul II. Members are asked to join in the gift again this year, and in the Masses offered for him, remember also those dearest to him, the weakest, the poor, the sick and the afflicted. John Paul II, whose birthday is May 18, will be 59. Elbe Syme, regional member at large from Ogden, spoke on the ideals and purposes of Soroptimist. After a brief question and answer period, President Helen Smith presented Mrs. Syme with a spring basket of flowers. The remainder of the program was presented by LuCylle Pace, service and welfare chairperson. She gave a talk on Girl Scouting and the leadership of Catherine Murdock. Mrs. Pace detailed the many accomplishments of Mrs. Murdock and presented her with a Soroptimist Award for outstanding service to the Girl Scouts of America. The award was accepted by Girl Scout Leader Jan Oliveto on behalf of Mrs. Murdock, who was unable to attend. Mrs. Pace also recounted the acof complishments Jayceen Cravens and presented her with a Soroptimist Award for Outstanding Girl Scout. attending the meeting were members Troop 622, who performed the flag ceremony.
