During the strikes, fellows used to hang out here to get all their information. They held all their meetings here, he continued. They came in here to find out the latest on the strike negotiations, and when they were to go back to work. During the depression he said people didn't have enough money to buy a beer, but they would still come in and sit around and talk. It was damn tough during those years, he added. In January a single man was laid off from the mines, because demand was down during that time. Business boomed during the war years, however, he said. The unions came around and asked us to stay open on Sundays, he said, because the men worked in the mines every other day of the week, and wanted to socialize at the bars. We couldn't get enough beer to sell, he explained. Wed be sold out after an hour or two. I had to go to the breweries in Ogden and Wyoming to get extra beer to sell. He explained that after the beer was all sold out they only had soda water to sell, but customers still The Silver Dollar Club, after being open nearly every day for 42 years, closed its doors for good Saturday, and with it a part of the history of Price. Im tired and ready for a rest, said Paul Mancina owner of the Silver Dollar, Ill eventually sell but after today it will be all locked the place, (Saturday) up. He said up until a few years ago they never closed the doors. We only closed it two days last year, he said. We closed up on Easter this year. When we first opened we didnt have any closing hours," he noted. We stayed open as long as our wanted us too, customers sometimes until two or three in the morning. In the 42 years he has been in business he said he has seen Carbon County boom and he has seen it go into depressions, and It looks like, he said, we are on the verge of a boom. When he began 42 years ago he said he was located across the street from where he is now at 36 W. Main Street in Price. I was across the street for only two years, said Mancina, Then, I bought this place from a Greek fellow who owned the place. The building in which the club is now located was originally a candy store called the Busy Bee, he explained, then it was the Post Office for awhile, and then was owned by a Greek. He couldnt remember what kind of business the Greek had run. I worked for three years in the coal mines, he explained, and then I got a friend, Earl Coombs, to finance me in starting the business, but at first I still had to work part time in the mines to make it financially. Over the period he has been at the present location, the building has charged very little, he said. In 1958 we took out the booths that we used to have and installed the sports counter, he added. Some of my customers have been coming in here for 30 years, came in. Beer has gone from a dime for a 14 oz. cup of eastern beer when I first started, he added, to $.55 in 1980. He noted that a case of beer wTas sold at $2.20 compared to the present price of $9.
