A forfeit loss by Veltris to the Friendly Tavern earlier in the half had not been taken into consideration in the league standings prior to this week. That loss left the drug crew one game behind UP&L in the final standings. Veltri Drug won the first half and the two teams will begin a two of three game playoff Monday night in the civic auditorium gym for the league championship. The playoff will continue Tuesday and Wednesday nights if necessary and Helper Mayor Charles Ghirardelli will be on hand after the final game to award the championship and second place trophies. He will also present individual awards to the ten members of the team for this season. The selections are made by balloting by the individual teams participating this season. Veltri and UP&L were tied at 9 when regulation time ran out Monday night and the utility team failed to score in the overtime period when Veltris put four points on the scoreboard to take a 9 victory. UP&L managed to hold Rufus Ellington, the leagues leading scorer, to just seven points through the first three quarters but the hit former CEU three field goals in the fourth quarter and another in the overtime to finish with 15 points. Steve Powell and Randy Ross paced the scoring for the winners with 18 points apiece. Powell was hitting from long range and Ross from in close, the former hitting a shot seconds before the buzzer ended the first half. UP&L had three players hit in double figures with Bill Jewkes leading the way with 21. John warmed up for the State Class basketball tournament here last Wednesday night by handing the Union Cougars a Class setback in a practice game that ended the regular season for Coach Dave Paurs Vikings. The East Carbon victory was tempered somewhat by the fact that the Union coach, former CEU eager Brad Monk, withheld three of his seniors from the game. It was still a fine effort by the Vikes, particularly defensively. East Carbon moves into the tournament picture this Class Saturday night at Richfield where they meet the sixth place team from Region 12, North Sevier, in a 6 p.m. game. The winner advances to the final eight team tournament at BYU the next week and the loser goes home to begin thinking of next year. ar East 63-5- 18 from cheerleader Wendy Sitterud after they lost the junior high championship game to Mont Harmon Thursday .evening. As a result, the other half of the Viking big two attack finished with only six points, but his defensive work was effective all night and he was responsible for getting the ball into the front court for the Vikes. Union tried to defense Scott Yelonek with just one man and the Vikes top scorer exploded for 27 points. Page Gunderson had another good night in totalling 13 points and sophomore Paul Candelaria contributed eight. Coach Paur was concerned over the loss of freshman Robbie Nielson who was out of the Union game and will likely miss the state tournament as well. Nielson suffered a broken foot in the Castle Country Classic Junior High Tournament at Mont Harmon last in the Viking game with Notre Dame. Paur said that although Nielson hasnt really logged too much playing time with the varsity this year, the tall, husky frosh has been valuable in spots to spell off King or Yelonek.
