The air has that sweet, fresh scent found only in the forest, as the green and growing things pump new oxygen into the air. Across the valley high rocky crags thrust skyward through their covering of green. I know deer rest in the meadows nearby, for Ive seen them when evening darkened into night. Recent rains have washed and revitalized my forest retreat Its beyond description. What it all boils down to is that all of this is less than an hour away from my front door. I come here often.. .to think, to write, to relax curse us for depriving them of their wilderness birthright, or bless us for maintaining what we can of it for their use and enjoyment The humpback whale, trumpeter swan, buffalo and eagle arent the only species needing sanctuaries. The species of man needs them tool course, we must utilize and wisely manage our wilderness treasures. But the whole country suffers when malegislators, local ones included, ke a bad choice that allows the needless waste or destruction of a natural resource. Future generations will either with only wild inhabitants. and to just borrow new courage and strength to cope with the complexities of modem life. Further up the canyon there are campgrounds all right, but they are to arranged that one can enjoy the feeling, of wilderness, or at least within a few minutes hike to a place The mountains were here eons ago. The stream danced down to the lake before there were men to see it But now, possibly for the first time, man is becoming capable of destroying or at least changing the wilderness to suit his whims. Of pine-scent- true that man always kills the now we loves? Are he things destroying the wilderness we love? Some say we have to, for we need the mineral wealth, timber, marine development. We need the space for new homes, industry, new cities for our growing population. For us there are few, if any Go West, firontiers. We cant young man, as could our pioneer ancestors. We have our national and state parks, yet many near populated areas are booked up months in advance and campers shoulder to bumper on paved campsites, with all the hot and cold running conveniences of home. The always lighted campgrounds never let in the stars-hin- e or moonglow...Why bother? As I write, Im just a few miles from home. Im shaded by matchst-ic- k straight pine and Hr towering protectively over their tiny comer of creation. In their conveniently placed branches birds find shelter from heat. the mid-da- y Not far away a clear and icy creek gurgles as it hurries on its descent from its high mountain birthplaceproviding power, culinary water and irrigation for the city below.
