Most go to one extreme or the other; some are too harsh, some are too lax. There seems to be no happy medium. Even the prison experts and authorities cannot agree on the best method to handle the dregs of society. However, many of them have accepted that parole, especially an early parole, does not rehabilitate a criminal. Actually, there is no such thing as rehabilitation. If a felon is released and goes straight, it is because he or she has learned a lesson and is tired of jail. If not, they will shortly be back in prison, usually with additional years to serve. Parole is not an answer. The PUBLIC NOTICES tightening of our judicial and penal systems is. The police and the prosecutors do their job in bringing the criminal to justice, but when the case gets into the court, the system seems to break down. light sentences or probations are given and is used and the criminal escapes his just deserts. In the prisons, the inmates security classification should be eyed closer. Any person convicted of a violent dime, should be placed in maximum security and classified as a security risk. Do away with half-wa- y houses, since they are a failure. Recently, a ring of burglars were found to be operating out of a half-wa- y house. An inmate in a half-wa- y house shot and paralyzed a young girl because he was placed in house through the the half-wa- y mistake and laxness of an official. His history of crime did not qualify house and in him for the half-wa- y the ensuing investigation by the plea-bargaini- governors LEGAL Wanted: Temporary male help to work for Salina City: If interested contact Gayle Nielsen, city recorder, at the Salina City offices. The ones who remain as correctional officers should their jobs and the state prison system. It leaves a lot to be desired as it is now. Our legislators need to work on revising the penal system and our existing system needs to be tightened up to prevent other incidents and mistakes. It needs to be done and can be done. Instead of parole or a half-wa- y house, why not set up minimum centers with a security more relaxed atmosphere where inmates could be prepared to society? Civic leaders and business men could come in and give talks on what to expect when they are released. A job service could be set up, a drivers license testing area, a more relaxed visiting facility, etc. In general, a school to teach inmates how to blend back into society, instead of just throwing them bade out into the world cold turkey. Possibly everyone would not qualify for such a program, but for many, this would be the difference between making it and not making it on the outside. Something must be done and done soon and I believe this can work. pre-relea- s Samuel D. Ware, Director Business and Support Services Published in the Salina Sun, June 16, 1983.
