Speer Salina Sun Editor I think its safe to say that the chamber is thrilled, excited and just a wee bit nervous about our great Salina Air Show this July 2. Although we have tried to saturate the south central Utah area with newspaper, radio, and poster advertising, I felt I ought to say a couple of things for the benefit of those in our immediate area things that couldnt be said on the advertisements. . . . Floods Bring Utahs Best Side to World First, I believe this will be one of the great events of its kind ever in this area fm proud that the One thing the recent floods have pointed out is that our can band together in love and service during a time of crisis. Although most of us already knew that, the world was able to see it also as national television crews showed the spirit of Utah to the world. One CBS newsman said the other side of the Utah flood stories was the heartwarming way in which peole helped each other and averted even greater crises. He said it was gratifying to watch Utahns assisting one another happily and effec-- ; tively. '. people . In our immediate areas here in South Central Utah, entire families could be seen filling sandbags, moving rocks and doing other odd jobs to help stop the floods from damaging their own and their neighbors properties. . Many hundreds of hours were donated by church and civic groups in dredging creeks and rivers. Many companies worked for a fraction of their regular fees to help with the problems caused by the flooding. Businesses have offered interest free buying for people hurt economically by the floods. The state and federal governments have responded quickly and effectively to the needs of the counties. Our Congressmen, particular-l- y Howard Nielson of our own Third District, have hard in behalf of Sevier and Sanpete, Counties to make sure we are not overlooked for needed benefits. All in all, it has been gratifying to watch the wheels of charity, service and effective crisis management turn during these times of flooding. Pastor Explains Grace By Pastor Jonathan Edwards ... 3 Faith Baptist Church ..Grace is a very interesting word, particularly as it appears in the Bible. One of the foundational tenets of Christianity is salvation by grace alone. Therefore, if a person desires to be a true Christian, it is important to understand this word. ? the root meaning of grace is unmerited or undeserved favor. Salvation by grace, therefore, becomes something totally unmerited, undeserved, unearned. Because of Gods grace, salvation is called the gift of God. A gift in any context would cease to be a gift if a person worked for and earned it. We must realize that there is only one salvation taught in the Bible. This salvation is totally the work of God; He does not simply enable us to earn it, He does it all. When we apeak of being saved, we speak of salvation from sins past, present and future; we speak of being rescued from the penalty, the power and ultimately the very presence of sin when we arrive in heaven. This Biblical salvation saves a person from a fiery, blade, eternal, confusing hell and to a home in heaven where be wgl dwell in the radiance and presence of God. But this fcalvation is not a passive thing bestowed automatically upon mankind. How does an individual realize the grace of God and the gift of God (salvation) in his life? The Chamber Topics Bible says in Ephesians 2:8 that the means or the vehicle through which the grace of God becomes ours is faith. This faith, however, is not a blind faith nor is it merely a general fjiffc but it is rather a faith eridoruing. to knowledge and it is specifically directed. The knowledge comes from the Bible, which in turn reveals that saving faith is total trust in and submission to Jesus Christ. Anything less or different results in a life devoid of genuine " hope. Our only concern is for the souls of people. We believe this is the most compelling, important message in the world. Our purpose is not to offend but to share the message of Gods good news. The second thing is a caution-frien- dly caution-- to some of the good people who live somewhat near the airport. The promoter told us that much of the airshow is low to the ground which is what makes it exciting (and, I might add, seeab-le- ). I would advise anyone who wants to see the airshow to go to the Redmond airport where the show will be held. We wouldnt want anyone to be disappointed thinking they could see the better part of the show from their yards. This really will be a tremendous TO THE EDITOR Editor, Sun An unfortunate incident occurred Saturday, June 3, at the North (Pioneer) Cemetery. A series of events led to a bad decision and some of the people in this area were inconvenienced and, no doubt, suffered a monetary loss. How grateful we are to the sweet lady who confided to a friend that she would like to complain about the loss of her silk flowers but she is aware of how much time and effort the Larsens have put in to make the cemetery as nice looking as it is and she doesnt want to appear ungrateful. We do appreciate you madam, and all the others who understand an error was made . and have forgiven us. I always thought it was Christian to forgive. My Sunday School tea on you! Again, thanks to those who understand and will forgivewe truly appreciate you. To those who found it so necessary to verbally abuse Larry, Rosetta and me and will not forgive, I would suggest you speak with the mayor and the other coundlmen requesting they accept my resignation from the Salina City Council. BY JAN I Since I done gradgeeated, decided its time to try my luck in the cold, cruel world and face the worldly ways of the big city. Im moving to Salt Lake City. A couple of friends and I decided wed share an apartment in the salty city, and of course this meant finding one. After being spoiled by living in a large, lovely sorority house for the past three years, several of the apartments left a lot to be desired (they would leave much to be desired no matter where one had lived prior to seeing it! ! ! ) Looking for a humble abode was a humbling experience. Our first stop wasnt bad at all. It was in the process of being painted so it was a little difficult to see with everything covered in newspaper, but it looked a lot better than what we had anticipated. . Having great luck the first crack out of the barrel got our hopes up. Our second stop put us in the humorous mood one needs to be in when apartment shopping. It was a lovely place on First North. As we walked down the hall we realized something was missing. Noise! It was prefectly quiet. It was the middle of the morning, long before anybodys nap time and there wasnt a TV to be heard, no stereos, not even any voices. Then we asked about the residents. The average age was 0 years old. Now, I have nothing against ; the' older"' generation, but for young coeds fresh out of college, the geriatrics ward isnt my idea of a wild and crazy time! 70-8- for Our next memorable visit was a from dive across the University. After rousing the landlord, who was floating around on a cloud of some sort of smoke, we trudged through the jungle of the yard to the basement apartment. Our hopes soared as he claimed it was partially furnished, and what we couldnt come up with, the landlord would provide. Our hopes took a dive as we entered the dive. The living room had a small table and chair that was missing one leg. I proceeded to the bedroom, where I found a bed, or more correctly, a set of springs on a frame. There was also a nice dresser, minus the draws and a pile of dirty clothes that a family of mice had beat us to. As I was chuckling over my find in the bedroom my friend hollered for me to come see the kitchen. As I walked into the spacious kitchen my head was turned as I told Judy about the bedroom. As I turned to see the kitchen, I found myself in a small closet that contained a sink, a stovA and fridge. You could put one hand in the sink and the other on the stove, and not have to stretch at all. One good point, not much floor to mop! ! ! After hiking all over Salt Lake City, fording State Street and 13th East, we finally found a place teat '! would do. Now, we face the trials and tribulations of moving in and fending for ourselves! But we do have an apartment, sweet little 1 UNPSQ9PE NURSERY Centerfield, Utah OUR CLASSIFIED ADS 528-367- HAVE WHAT 9 YOU WANT!
