Although we think it is commendable both for North Sevier citizens to rise up and publically protest the Forest Services plan to close the road and for the Forest Service to postpone the plan when public comment went against it, the idea itself is reminiscent of an ongoing scene of locking the public out of its own lands. grazing areas are being restricted; too much land is hunters; too many roads are being blocked. Those favoring the closing say it is needed to help rehabilitate the area after Phillips 66s drilling for oil. And although the oil company is paying for the rehabilitation of the area as mandated, we see no reason why the job cannot be done without closing another road to the public. Too many forbidden to Instead of treating the public like children, why not appeal to the better nature of our nature and recreation lovers and ask for their help. Instead of closing the road and saying You arent mature enough to take care of an area we are trying to rehabilitate, why not leave the road open and ask for the publics hen and Sunspots 529-783- consideration? We are not chastising the Forest Service, especially since the decision has not been made. In fact, we believe the Forest Service has shown its willingness to listen and its respect for citizen opinion when it postponed its decision to close the road. We believe, however, that the Forest Service should veto the closure altogether. believe that the people who use the road should take care that any rehabilitation efforts are not thwarted by their recreational use of the land. With the taxes we all pay and the fees the users hand out to enjoy our publically owned lands, the burden of proof for closing any areas should rest on those persons who pay little or nothing for its use and whose only concern is some spurious theory about the We also Who is giver? the the gospel and get onto the of it. mysterious My problem is not that I received these tracts, but that I do not know who delivered them. In a sense, all tragedy has a purpose, even though it was caused by senseless behavior or a criminal act. (Kelleys tragedy was, in my a result of neither). The opinion, She told me that Kelley had been in several accidents during the preceding months before the tragedy and that at one time he said, "You know, Mother, I think Ive been marked for death." Speakers at the funeral mentioned Kelleys near somber and pensive moods at times. They quoted thoughts that he had written down. Bishop Anderson especially talked about how he, like I, did not believe all tragedies had to have a divine purpose, but that in this case, he sensed one. fully and appropriately. My tendency is to believe I purpose is found in the faith one has that life itself is a challenge-fille- d journey. That journey can last for many long and happy years, or it can be cut short without a moments notice. Perhaps it is groping to believe that this part of lifes test quite often is given randomly without regard to strength or belief, but the evidence seems to point dearly in that direction. That fact (if it is a fact) does not take away from any purpose, but simply adds another dimension to the meaning of life and its challenges.
