Elementary schools in Davis County can g chose that includes music, or schools can leave the art to each classroom teacher, or to volunteers in the districts Music Start Program. No elementary school, however, has one person devoted to the subject. A former champion gymnast who was paralyzed in an accident, she spoke to the group about facing adversity and overcoming personal challenges. . .Never, never give up. Make a promise to yourself that you will keep trying, keep going and keep smiling. There is always hope, she said. . :j Smith competed in national gymnastics competitions for seven years, and was the Junior Olympics national champion. A three-tim- e at the University of Utah, she led the Lady Utes gymnastic team to win their first of eight national titles. In 1981 while training with a gymnastics professional tour, she over-rotata flip and fell. Smith was paralyzed from the chest down and began life in a wheelchair. They reside in Salt Lake. Musical numbers were performed by the Clearfield Community Church childrens choir and Glory Johnson Smith, and women had their choice of various workshops. Jerrilyn Roush presented a workshop on dealing with lifes challenges. A former LDS missionary, Roush worked closely with the Young Womens general board. She told the group that love will help overcome challenges. Its important you know who you are, keep your perspective positive, have a happy attitude, and give freely of yourself to others. She used the object lesson of the cookie crumbles. So what if the cookie crumbles. Life is not always going to be easy. The performances are scheduled for April 26 and 27 at Davis High School at 7:30 p.m. The choir, under the direction of Michael Huff, is preparing Solemn Vespers K339 and Ave Verum Corpus. Also on the program will be Divertimento In D K136 for Strings and Exaltate Jubilate for Soprano and Orchestra. Choir members travel from as far away as Provo to the south and Clinton to the north to rehearse each Sunday evening at South Davis Junior High School. While the majority of the 100 choir members reside in Davis County, others come from Sail Lalje City, West Valley City and South Jordan. Susan Dolan is an actress from Salt Lake City who is in her second season with the choir. She was seeking to participate in a choir to help her develop better singing skills for her musical theater work. She worked with Huff when he was the musical director for a play she was directing. Daniel Hay, a tenor who travels from Clinton each week to sing with the choir, is a professional genealogist with a music degree. I like the challenge of the music and its worth it to come so far. Six members of the same extended family find that coming to choir is a great way fo meet each week. Paul and Denise McGuire, from Bountiful, sing alongside Pauls mother presentors at the Community Womens Confer ence last Saturday. in singers lives and aunt, Coreen McGuire and LuAnn Anderson, who both live in Provo. They were all introduced to the choir by their relatives. Bob and MaiyLynn Baer of Bountiful. Bob Baer, who also sings with the Utah Symphony Chorus, may be the choirs oldest member of age 72. The youngest choir members are Josh Hardy, Richard Allred, and Clark Lawlor, all Centerville residents. Hardy, who I attends Centerville Junior High says, come to keep my voice in shape. Its fun. Like many who make it a family affair, Lawlor comes with his mom.
