Show 8 Saturday. Lakeside March 16. 1996 Lakeside Review Substitute teachers toil under tough conditions Wired up Roger Mecham had been dabbling in real estate to help make ends meet, but he decided he e needed a better job. So he became a substitute teacher in Salt Lake County's Jordan District. part-tim- That was 12 years ago. I dont care if you earn $100,000 a year, the extra money comes in handy," he says. Each school year, Mecham and thousands of other substitutes -- among them a dentist, Utah Highway Patrol trooper, retired military officer and pilot - take over Utah classrooms accredited when teachers are ill or absent. Even so, Utah has a statewide shortage of substitute teachers, forcing many districts to staff classrooms with whoever is available at the moment. There are no exact figures on substitute teachers in the state, but an estimated 25,000 nationally. Many, like Mecham, do not have education degrees, although teachers are given preference for substitute slots. Requirements vary in Utah's 40 districts, but most substitutes must have attended college. All must pass background checks and be fingerprinted. For that, subs practice one of teaching's toughest jobs for $35 to $65 a day without benefits, and they often are summoned at the last min- cancies. But we still have a shortage and have to call the schools that have lists of emergency substitutes, says Granite personnel director Dale Baker. There are days, however, when no subs are available and teachers have to cover for each other, says Granite Education Association President Lars Erickson. So, you have educators handling 50 to 60 kids in two classes. He says the difficulties of substitute teaching and low pay are key factors in the shortage. Jordan district has 450 subs, including Mecham, and uses up to 220 a day. A substitute teacher is more than a warm body, Mecham says. v ' ' s ,s ROBERT , pense.
