Leave the decision-makin- g process what to plant, when, where to the child as and how much much as possible. Share the preliminary research, which will include sending for seed catalogs, perusing the gardening shelves at bookstores and in the library, and visiting nurseries and botanical gardens. Study the offerings in the seed catalogs carefully. What grows in your area, and how sturdy and is it? What time of year is it best started? How many seeds do you get for the price? Ask a local 'nurseryman to suggest appropriate plants for beginners. Almost any home can support some kind of garden. Vegetables can be grown in a small area and are highly rewarding. As youngsters are taught to respect and cooperate with the natural world, they learn patience, how to plan, how to follow directions and how to observe results. They also develop an awareness of natural cycles. Gardening is an art. Children help create living beauty by intermixing various forms, sizes and colors of plants. Nearly all the rules of gardening are ultimately flexible and open to experimentation, so childrens creativity is enhanced. Young gardeners also feel the joy of nurturing living things and seeing them develop and face the responsibility of caring for something over a period of time.
