Show The arts and people behind the scenes Wednesday neview July 6, 1988 'Great Outdoors' a 9ft two-ho- ur THE GREAT OUTDOORS Rated PG, contains some adult situations. The Great Outdoors is playing at the Davis Drlve-l- n and the Cmedome 70 theaters and rates two reels of five. Great Outdoors The Great Outdoors" should be ti- tled Dan Aykroyd and John Candy Throw One Away In The Woods." Candy, coming off his best performance, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," is Chet Ripley, a family man in search of a retreat in the woods. However, one thing the Ripley didnt count on was an unexpected visit from his obnoxious brother-in-laRoman, played by Aykroyd. Hughes, responsible for the hit "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," seems to have taken a recess with the CandyAykroyd combination, counting on their good names to supply the film with success, rather than his usually handy pen work. But its not going to work. The Great Outdoors," even with the likes of the former SCTV and Saturday Night Live stars, is a movie I suspect will soon be listed as a summer drive in And co-hi- t. soon after that, one of those v- ideos no one ever reserves. The slapstick antics that are attempted in this film and noticeably fail, you can tell from the lack of laughter, range from racoons and Aykspeaking with sub-title- s diafamiliar royd's logue. It's the same dialogue found in his Roman Craig (Dan Aykroyd) and other comedy catastrophes Dr. Detroit and The Couch Trip" But the man who helped coined the phrase, who ya gonna call" isnt the only disappointment in this film. Candys role as Chet is ugly, as he assumes the character of a mere punching bag for fiends who dis Other performances who turn this week-loncampout into a two-hoordeal at the theater includes bear and a a vengeful man who has been struck by lightning 66 times. Now isnt the funny? Well, that figures. Because neither is The Great Outdoors." like people who are nice, caring and concerned And Chets family fares no better. Family members include a lovesick teen played by Chris Young, a son who favors Roman over his own dad played by Ian Giatti, and a wife who insist he remain patient played by Stephanie Faracy.
