Her family live 1 -- in another part of the country and she is alone. When a neighbor notices that her is constantly dirty and uncarcd for, she calls the Department of Social Services and a case worker comes to visit Mary Ann in her home. She admits that she is having trouble coping with parenting and welcomes the help the Department of Social Services can offer her. They discuss the role of a parent aide, a volunteer who works with families on a weekly basis. Mary Ann and the parent aide discuss nutrition, cleanliness and how to be a good parent. They work out a budget and cleaning schedule together. The parent aide uses charts to remind Mary Ann to use positive discipline instead of hitting the children. The two women become good friends. Now after six months Mary Ann feels that she can handle her situation better and is taken off the Social Services re cords but the two continue to communicate. When Mary Ann gets a job offer, the first person she calls is her former parent aide. The above story is fictitious but fairly typical, says Loretta Enders, the parent aide coordinator. Buy fruit, vegetables farm-fres- h LAYTON Consumers will have the opportunity to purchase h fruit and produce directly from the farmer at the Utah Farm Bureaus annual Farmers Markets. The first markets got underway in Layton and Salt Lake City Aug. 14. According to Reed Balls, UFB director of member relations and commodity activities, the annual famrers markets will run until at two locations: the Layton Hills Mall in Layton, and at the Utah Farm Bureau Center, located immediately west of Interstate 15 on 5300 South, in Murray. The markets will be held on Fridays and Saturdays, beginning at noon and continuing until 6 p.m., or until all produce is sold. The farmers market is an excellent way for consumers to deal directly with the producer of the fruit and produce they want, farm-fres- mid-Octob- er j Balls said. Consumers can expect to see a wide variety of locally grown veg- etable, such as tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, sweet corn, and peppers at these markets, as well as the peaches, pears, apples and other fruit Utah is famous for. We also believe, though, that its a good opportunity for our farmers to get a better feel for the types of fruit and produce todays consumers want, he said. They hear directly from the buyers of these products the kinds of qualities they want in them. This helps the farmer to be more efficient by growing a crop that consumers want to, and will utilize. Those desiring further informa- tion about participating in the Farm Bureau Farmers Markets should contact Balls at 261-486- 4.
