The signs that reflect society trends have been a Monico trademark. One sign that brought vitriolic calls and letters is one that read, If you want to stop crime - shoot an attorney. It also brought a $5 check from an Ohio police force who wanted a copy of a calendar on which the message was printed. Golf is favorite pastime of the Monicos. the owners... Peg Monico - igsW y This a place cleaved away ROY from the day and permanently tucked into the night. The black ceiling is dotted only with red lamps and a few small spotlights. Pyramids of soft light are cast over the pool tables. A haze from cigarettes floats through the air and a flash from a distant table tattletales a match being lit for another cigarette that will give even more haze. Escape from the ordinary flow of life is one reason people stroll into Pegs Lew Monicos Bar and Grill in Roy and spend a few hours, talking and sharing quiet conversation, punc- - . ROY Some people go to work and then go to a bar. Peg and Lew Monico go to work and stay at a bar. Moni-co'- s They own the place. Its Pegs Lew Bar and Grili, a Roy landmark. Just in the name of the place, a hint of the humor and character of the Monicos can be found. As Lew puts it, he owns the bar and grill but she owns him. Thats why there is an extra posessive apostrophe in the name of the tavern. Both of them have played all the roles necessary in a production the size and scope the establishment has been for 25 years. They have been cooks, bartenders, janitors, waiters, and managers. But neither has been a dancer. Weve been yerything but the entertainment, Peg said. The moving force of the duo is Lew. Looking like he was cut from a mold close to Dustin Hoffmans, Lew Monico teases society's perception of itself. If God were to come for the resurrection here in Utah hed probably get shot deer hunting," he said. And when asked what he would do differ 'v ently if he had the past 25 years to live over, he answered, I think Id convert to a Mora family bank-e- r. mon and become a banker dollar He was referring to a embezzlement at Family Bank. He has a philosophy that appeals to many Americans. He feels the United States should have done a more complete and thorough job in the recent bombing of Libya. Though challenged by societys foibles, Lew Monico finds the greatest competition in the game of golf. Its the only game Ive never conquered in my life, he said. And in keeping with his standard k answer, he says I should take the Utah Open this year. Peg said, hes playing pretty good golf and his handicap should be three this year. That competition to do well is evident in Lew on the golf course. He will play two balls on a round so he can compare new and old sets of clubs at the same time under the same conditions.
